For my kumho at51...ended up breaking 4 studs 2 on one wheel 30 mins before close on a Saturday. Ended up getting it to 2 new studs, 2 spare studs, rocking 5/6 lugs on two wheels im pretty sure right now. What sucks aside from having to go back sometime for studs soon is they were aftermarket black ones now I have to get more. This happened at a local shop i trust. They put them on initially but another shop did a little work once so not sure whats up... Was like 30* today

This is bound to happen at shops that use impacts to reinstall tires, a impact is for removing lug nuts and maybe initial install of lug nuts but not to completely tightening them only to get them down close to tight and then they should be using a torque wrench, anytime I have my tires serviced/rotated or replaced I watch them like a hawk when they reinstall the lug nuts and make sure they don't tighten them with the impact, only a torque wrench .
Anytime you over torque lug nuts too much you stretch the lug stud and over time they will break, 5, 10 even 20 lbs of over torque is not going to hurt anything but most commercial impacts can over torque the lug nuts twice to three times or even much much more then they should be, commercial impacts can easily torque 200 to 500 lbs or more!!

Happened to me when I had my tires replaced. They tightened it so much my electric impact gun can't do it. I had to use a 3 feet breaker bar and I was struggling on that too. I thought the lug bolts will break. If you get a flat tire where no one else can help, you will be stranded.
I rotate my tires now and torque it and and anti seize my rim and hub mating surface and will never come back to that repair shop. That's 1 less customer for them.

Yes other than broken studs, as you mentioned it's very hard to impossible to get the lugs loose on the side of the road with no real tools other than what comes with the vehicle when you have a flat if they tightened them with a high torque impact wrench, that scenario was exactly what got me watching them like a hawk when doing my tires, it took me over 2 hours to get my lugs broken loose with just a L shaped lug wrench on the side of the road to change a flat on my work truck, I actually broke the L shaped lug wrench on the last 2 lug nuts and had to call a builder I knew was close by since I had just left his job site before the flat and it still took a good effort using his L shaped lug wrench which luckily didn't break and got the last 2 loose, never again!!

I HATE those lazy asses that do this. If I ever do go to a shop that required them to remove the tires, I literally stand there and stop them from using impacts. They get annoyed but it’s my damn car and I’m paying for their time. My first set of wheels got some wicked damage from them using impacts to start the lugs. I didn’t notice till way later and too late to do anything about it. Idiots. /end rant lol

I’m at a local farm store getting some KO2s installed. I told the counter person no pneumatic tools, please. To which the reply was, “I don’t think they have those back there.” Lord help me.
