Just installed Silvania Silverstars

No pissing allowed!

The whole idea is to light the ground below the fog in front of your vehicle and not reflect back. The lower you mount the fixture to the ground the better.

I don't have to tell you that lighting for rally and for the street are apples and oranges.

oh.. and i just did "conversion". On one side i have my 9006ST and on the other side the converted 9005ST.

Results: 9006ST still gave better results. A little more of a "whiter light". The converted 9006ST gave off a "warmer" light. I will take some picture tonite.

Notice any issues with 'stray' light, caused by the 9005 bulb tip being clear instead of darkened?

Nope. I notice a little stray light on the left side of the vehicle but that's about it. Looks kind of like a bit of the top beam is covered. I notice this when I park close to a wall.


Other than that... a converted "9005" and a "9006" from sylvania look and feels the same. Silverstars in generally will give you a significant increase in lighting over the stock bulbs.

Low Beam: 9006ST (should upgrade the stock bulbs)
High Beam: 9005ST (depends on how much highway driving)
Fog Light: 9006ST (can keep stock. saves $$)


I drove beside a X5 yesterday night.. and although the shade of my lights aren't as white as their HIDs.... it was just as bright and close in color. I've put Silverstars in both the low beam and the fog lights.
 
Now to make a total mess of things...........

I read this post and was thinking what a great mod, who dosent need more light? So I went by the parts store on my way home from work and got a set just for the low beam to try them out. I put them in and went for a test drive. My impression was they put out less light and looked lower than my stock bulbs ( I do have a 3 in lift and have not adjusted the pattern)? I took them out a few hours later and returned them the next day.
I was thinking that I could have had them at an angle but would that make a diff? It only plugs in one way but could it be tilted a bit? I will stick with my stock lights and use the Lightforce's to throw out some more light when I need it.

Just my experience .. start the flaming.
 
Hey man sorry to hear abuot your time w/ them. My low beams actually shine a little it higher. And its definitly brighter/whiter. When I first installed them the clip wasnt on securly and it didnt really work too well, maybe that happened? Or maybe it wasnt plugged in all the way?

What is the brightest halogen bulb?
For the 55W marked segment, sorted in order of brightness:

+50%: Philips Vision Plus

+30%: Philips Premium, Osram Silverstar (European marked only - see note below)

+20%: Osram/Sylvania Xtra Vision, Osram/Sylvania Silverstar (North american marked only - see note below)

+0%: Philips Bluevison, Osram/Sylvania Cool Blue, Osram/Sylvania Halogen Plus, and OEM bulbs like GE.

-10%: PIAA Superwite

Silverstar: Do not confuse the European (clear glass) Silverstar with the North american (slightly blue tinted) Silverstar. The blue tint steals light!

OK. Here's the final verdict.

Test Vehicle #1: Black 2003 4Runner Limited
Test Vehicle #2: Silver 2003 4Runner Limited

Products Tested:
- Stock 9006
- SilverSTAR 9006ST
- SilverSTAR 9005ST (modified to fit low beam)

* Tested all three bulbs in both test vehicles
* Tested at night
* Test done with vehicles side-by-side


Results:
- Stock bulbs were not bright and practically useless
- 9006ST bulbs came straight out of the package and into the low beam housing. The result is that there was a significant increase in lighting and color (much brighter and much whiter).
- 9005ST bulbs that were modified so that they would fit into the low beams. The results gave an advantage over the stock bulbs BUT produced a less "white" color than the 9006ST bulbs.
- Both the 9006ST and the 9005ST produced relatively the same intensity of lighting. The only thing different is the color.


Recommendations:
- Save yourself some trouble and just buy the 9006ST bulbs for your low beams. It produces a whiter light and is just as bright as a modified 9005ST.
- I also changed the fog light bulbs to SilverSTARS on the black 4ruuner to match the low beams. They are much better than the stock ones.

Once again, this is a personal test done on the same vehicle brand. Both cars were parked beside each other at the time of testing at done at night. Anything reflected above is of a personal opinion.

to silverstar or not to silverstar...

ScottAW.... i have the silverstars.. and yes, the are brighter than original bulbs... i'd seriously look into these:

Philips Vision Plus

after reading the review on them, those just might be the ticket....

however, i do like my silverstars.... the look better... offroading wise... i just ordered 4 KC Titanium driving/fog light systems for my truck... light won't be an issue in a month for me... :)
 
I did my low beams a couple of monthes ago, I did my high beams and fog lamps on Friday. I can tell a difference for sure. Its a good thing they dont cost all too much because i dont feel it was that big of a difference.

Ok, I think I am going to go the HID route instead.

Can anyone tell me where to do and what price is good to pay?

Are they easy or hard to install ?

Make sure when you get HID's... is that you properly aim them. Another thing is that... please please please don't get HID's that are rated more than 5000K. Otherwise.. it'll look too purple/blue = what riced out civics have.
