KDSS Maintenance

Ever since I brought my vehicle to the dealer for the first regularly scheduled service, I noticed that even though the VIN is correct on the paperwork, it lists the model as a "2014 4Runner SR5 4.0L" instead of a Trail Edition. I ask them to change it every time(which they don't), and the guy always tells me not to worry about it because scanning the VIN is what actually tells them what services to perform, which I don't know if I 100% believe.

Here's my concern; since the KDSS is really the only system that's Trail specific, is it ever included as a service item? The majority of these services are just checking fluid levels and oil changes, but I just want to make sure that they don't overlook items pertaining to KDSS because they think it's a SR5. Granted the tech should be able to tell the model from the wheels, hood scoop, lack of badge etc., but I wouldn't put it past them to just do what they're system tells them.

Has anyone ever seen any routine maintenance items pertaining to the KDSS when taking your truck to the dealer for scheduled maintenance? All I can find from searching is about if you have to re-bleed the whole system.

As far as I've learned here and elsewhere, kdss is pretty much maintenance free (unless it breaks down and that seems rare). The hood scoop, however, I think it needs to be lubed every 6 months in order to perform correctly...;):

That's what I had heard as well, but I know it's pricey to repair so I'd have greater peace of mind knowing they check the seals and bolts to make sure they're not leaking or anything, at least while it's still under warranty. I just wanted to hear from someone who has more miles on the truck than I do in case it's something to bring up to the dealer.

No scheduled maintenance for KDSS. Just be careful ordering things like sway bar bushings and front lower control arms.

It will never require maintenance for the life of the vehicle. The exception would be visual inspection every10K or so. Unfortunately there are very few qualified to even know what they are looking at. Basically you visually inspect the major components, hydraulic lines and cylinder rods and bushings. When I had my TE I did it myself every oil change.

I have nothing to contribute to this thread but it also annoys me that my service sheets always say "SR5" when I bought a GD Limited. I also notice a lot of the inventory on the dealer websites say SR5 and a lot of private online adds falsely advertise years and sometimes models ie Limited. I saw one Limited listed as a 2014 when it was clearly a 2013 or older lol.

Jaycee,

I know exactly what you mean. There's are 2 listings in my area for a "Trail Premium", which I got really excited about. One was a Trail base, which I had to explain to the dealer, and one is an SR5, which the private seller assures me is a trail. (no scoop, crawl control, manual t-case, etc.)

They are all SR5's with different options lol. Every single 4Runner.

I had the skid plate off the KDSS accumulator assembly recently to install some sliders, and I couldn't believe how much mud was caked up there. A couple taps on the driveway and it was good to go. Just (2) 12mm bolts on the bottom of the plate. I'll empty that out again in the future.

As far as checking for leaking... No one will ever care about your car more than you do. Take some time to get under your rid and look it over for things that seem out of the ordinary (loose bolts, leaking fluid, damage, etc.)
With the limited amount of issues that have been reported on the KDSS, that should be enough to give you some decent peace of mind. :thumb3:

Worked out well for me...

In 2011 I bartered with the online sales guy for the "SR5" with 30k miles on his lot. took it home for 28k which was 2k under NADA for my area and have enjoyed my rear locker and KDSS ever since.

Leaks should be pretty easy to spot....
