Kenwood DNX7100

I love this nav and I don't even have it yet.
One thing though...some brands of nav gives out retarded routes instead of straight forward/shortest route. Do Kenwood Nav unit sometimes acts all retarded? Another thing...how da heck do they fit entire US map in 2gig hd when pioneer z2 uses 10gigs?

i have mine set up to ask if i want shortest distance or fastest route. if i use fastest route it makes me take weird routes like over highways and such.

if i use shortest distance for all the use i have on mine it has taken me my normal route.

i think the z2 allows you to store mp3s on that hard drive and thats why its so big.


on a side note it allows you to load up custom pois. some one told me their were sites that index all sorts of things to add like red light cameras such. has any one found one of these sites because i cant

4Runner1371....nice taste! I received all the parts/harnesses except for the actual unit on Sunday so being impatient, I started the installation. Got the whole dash disassembled (which really wasn't that hard) and have wired up both the TYTO-01 and SWI-JACK as much as possible. Everything is pretty straight forward. So now I'm just waiting for the unit to arrive tomorrow I'm keeping good notes and pictures so I'll post the install as soon as possible.

Regarding POIs...I found this. but I'm not 100% sure this will work with the DNX7100. Garmin does have POI Loader software that will work with their other units. I'm contacting them now to find out if it will work with the DNX7100. It should since it has the same database as the other listed units and it also has the SD slot.

Hows the map in off-road areas? Are there backcountry trails etc? Check out the area around Deckers Colorado if you could.

Ok, need some help here. The unit arrived today and everything is hooked up correctly including the SWI-JACK and the TYTO-01. My problem is that the unit's motorized screen will not close after I insert a CD/DVD etc. It opens correctly, the CD/DVD is accepted and even starts to play. But the screen never retracts. The only way it will retract is if I turn off the power.

I really hope I don't have a defective unit! Any ideas??

NOO!!!:bugeye: Maybe there's soft close button? Like in Eclipse unit? Like on the screen?

Yea, this sucks. Just tried it again. I even used the factory reset button to set everything back to defaults and still no go. The manual doesn't give any help. There is an EJECT button and the manual says that if you hold it down for a second, the unit should close, but all that does is try to eject a CD/DVD even if there isn't one loaded.

Guess I get to call Kenwood now

Just talked to Kenwood...Happy @#$%@$#% DAY! :bash: It's defective! The Eject button should open and close the unit...and it doesn't on mine.

Wonderful.....now I get to send this unit back and wait for another one. Not happy.

that sucks man i always bench test my units before installing them into the car to check for that. do enough installs and you will do that every time to.

Update: Tonight I was able to get ahold of the Amazon Marketplace seller and they are going to cross-ship me another unit! Nice! Should be here in a few days.

what i do is plug the harness that came with the unit into to the back of the stereo and then sit it on my workbench and just connect the positive and neg to an ac to dc converter. an old car battery, lawn mower battery or other small battery works well to. once you have it hooked up you power it on and test every thing on the workbench so that if something dose not work you know about it before riping your dash apart
