I've got a 2012 shoreline blue TE being delivered tomorrow. I was wondering if i could go to home depot and get a a key made that doesn't have the huge plastic piece on the end that will just unlock the doors. Thanks!

congrats on the TE! that being said, it should come with two electronic keys and a vallet key that wont have any of the electronic stuff on it, just a key for opening the doors and starting the truck.

If you're not using your tow hitch for anything, you can always get one of these

They're also good for stashing cab money if you have a little too much to drink and can't drive or a spare key in the event you somehow lock your keys in the car.

That Hitchsafe is awesome. What a cool idea.
My wife says neither about me; must be something about getting married. It has either clouded her perception of me or she has sobered up.
I have a shackle in the receiver that I mostly keep in place because of the tactile based parking method that so many DC drivers use. I suppose I could give that up an get a hitch safe. I lose stuff like I'm getting paid for it (that includes keys).

FYI. Master Lock also makes something similar and it is significantly cheaper. $21 on amazon right now.

Pretty lame reviews for it, though. If I'm hanging a key on the outside of my truck, I'll pay the $60.

If you leave the key on the truck, all someone has to do is try the door. It unlocks unless the key is something like 15 feet away.
I usually just stash mine along the trail to the waves or something, but it's kind of weird that the electronic part still works even when you pop the metal key part out of it.

I went ahead and spent the extra bucks on the hitch safe.

:welcome: Glad I could provide a useful suggestion. My buddy had it on his Jeep when he and I were stationed in NYC. Was real useful then and we've used it for surfing as well on the west coast. The cap is nice because no one else realizes what it is, just looks like a hitch cover. I have an SR5, no smart key, so the smart key think didn't occur to me, but its pretty useful.
I've got a hitchsafe and absolutely love it. I keep a spare key and about $20 in there, just for backup. The cover works great...snaps on smoothly and obscures the number dial.
My only complaint would be that when I initially installed it I had trouble sliding it into the hitch and actually ended up having to file it down a bit on either side to get it to fit flush. No big deal though.
