Alright guys,

So I'm starting to have trouble with my key (Yes I only have one). It is so loved that it is starting to give me fits when opening the doors and glove box. I just don't want to let it go so far I can't start the truck. What is the best option for me? I called the stealership and they told me 110(55 of the key and 55 for programing it) a key. I guess anything with the 6cyl has a chip in the key or is programed? True or not?

What year is your 4runner? Keys for my 98 were only $7 for the stealership.. Have you tried calling another dealer?
 
My 99 highlander has a regular key, however some models that year have the chipped keys. My local locksmith will charge 75 for the key (30- key, 45- program). If you have AAA or have a friend that does and will spare a few minutes to help you out just call them and tell them you lost your key and you can save 50-100 depending on if you have basic or plus membership. Most dealers can look up your key cuts by the vin on your truck, some can't. If you decide a locksmith they will remove your passanger or glove box lock and read the code on the cylinder, that will give them the code for the proper cuts to your truck assuming you never changed the ignition.
 
Another option for you, and it may cost just a little extra, is to remove the ignition yourself. It's very easy to do, you just remove the bezel around the ignition and turn the key to aux. then on the bottom of the ignition is a round plug that you push with a bent pick I believe it's around the 5'0 clock position. Once removed take the removed part to the locksmith and have them replace the wafers, be sure to ask them to remove the split wafers, ( they are nothing but trouble and will leave you stranded not if, but when). While they are replacing the wafers they now know the key cuts and can make a new key. To replace the wafers should be around 20 bucks ontop of a new key, trust me it will save you a big headache later on down the road. Just look up Toyota split wafers on the web and see people's stories.

So I got a Stealership on the phone that could run the Vin. Yep it is chipped. So 130 per key and 140 for a clicker. So for 600 bucks you can have two fresh keys made from Toyota. FML I swear. That is the price of a nice bumper almost or other cool stuff.
 
Walmart, some can do chipped keys. It all depends if they have the attachment on their key machine. I remember asking and thought it was around $15 for a chipped key and like 3 for non chipped.
 
The problem is no the key it's self. If I take it to Wal Mart etc they do not have the codes to cut it. The key i have is shot to hell. The key is not to bad it is the programing and book time that is the killer. A blank medal key is 7 bucks at the dealer. The key with the thick black end is 55-65 bucks. The rest is programing it to the car so the adviser says.
 
So if a key is solid metal then it doesn't have a chip? But if it had a plastic/rubber cover over the top, it is chipped? Sorry if I got off topic.

Half right. All metal means no chip because there is no place for the chip. But there are plastic headed keys with no chips. My '99 SR5 came with two master keys, both unchipped: one all metal and one with a plastic head. My copies are $6 at a hardware store.

So after calling around and prcing keys out and options I just went to a local dealer and had them cut a key. It was 100 bucks all said and done. Better than other that wanted almost 200. They get you on the book time for the coding.

Also found out that the front CV axle what was done at a shop is now leaking grease all over the place because the band broke, only 7 months old. And I also need to buy a head gasket kit and do that also. The servise adviser was nice enouph to ask for the job but at a tune of 1,100 for all that I told him that was not happening. Parts at retail over the counter were less than 350, the rest was labor for the Tech.

Always a good time at the stealership. He was cool and printed out the parts list for everything and the price so I can fix it myself.
