Key question

I promise.. I've searched! And I've searched properly..
I have a question on the 5th gen, SR5 key, with the integrated door lock buttons.
I've had experience with this type key before. It wasn't positive. The key came loose in the housing. Replacement keys are somewhat costly. Plus they are large to begin with.
Also, because I didn't find out until later, my new to me 2011 SR5 only has one key..
The question is, can I buy a chipped key that will start and run the 4 Runner, and then purchase separately, a key fob, that will lock and unlock the doors?
I just don't like the one piece key..

I really tried to search this.. Don't flame me.. Ha

I did see that post, and the replies. It looks like he was. Going to replace the key with the integrated fob. I'm trying to go with a two piece solution.. A chipped key, which can be purchased fairly cheaply, but then a separate fob, that will lock/unlock doors. I've also called/emailed the lock guys referenced in this and other threads. They only offer a integrated unit, or a chipped key..
I'm hoping there's someone here more knowledgable than I am, regarding keys and remote devices..

You could have another key made without the fob and use it as a back up. After you unlock and open the door the alarm will go off; but starting the engine should cancel the alarm. This happened to me with our Tundra. I went to Sams Club and locked up normally with the fob. When I came back out the fob wouldn't work (turned out to be dead battery) so I just unlocked with the key (setting off the alarm and a few strange looks). After I started the engine the alarm shut off. I don't know if the 4runner works the same way - but it's worth a test.

You have a 2011 so you should have a "G" key; to double check, go look at your current key stem and compare it to the pictures I posted in that thread Greg linked you to. What you need to do is get a replacement key only, chipped key that also has the G stamp on it so that the immobilizer can be programmed.

As for the separate remote portion, the closest thing I can think of is this: Toyota RAV4 ALLIN1 Flip Chip Key Keyless Entry Remote Entry Clicker Fob Control | eBay

I believe you can basically transplant your OEM key/fob guts right into that body, but it also has the flip out key on the side (not sure if that would annoy you to have an extra built in key). Maybe you can search around on ebay to see if they make aftermarket remote fob bodies that fit the internals from your OEM key/fob. There's a lot of different kinds out there, the above is just an example for you to look at. Take a look on ebay, there's literally thousands of them.

I think on my 4runner if you use the key to unlock the drivers side door, it disarms the alarm even if you armed it with the fob...same goes for the tailgate lock too.

You can get a fob-less key ->HERE<- but you will be out of luck on the fob. i cannot find any OEM fob that will work with the 5th gen trucks...

It seems like the guy was able to get the 5th gen style key to work with his 4th gen, so maybe you can get a 4th gen fob and make it work with your 5th gen?

Just goes to show, people always want what they can't have, lol

The other day, I was harassing the dealer I bought this 11 from, about something else, when I asked them again if they'd found the 2nd key, so they gave me the # of the previous owner. I called him, to ask about the key.. Turns out, he's a nice guy, said he had it, no prob to get it to me. Also I was able to ask him about the SR5, and why he traded it in etc.. All good news..
So I'll stay with the two original keys, and see how they hold up.
