do you have a regular blow torch? like a map-gas torch? the hotter the better, but just enough to soften the steel should do it before the bashing begins...

The front bumper looks good! Your skids might be worse than even mine, I'm dreading the date I have to pull them off. I'm pretty sure I will have to cut them up and re-weld them to get them back on the truck.
 
So this is what I have done. I made some relief cuts on the sides of the skid and re-welded them. It's not perfect but it works. I feel that skids are a consumable item. But I don't want to be rebuilding them anytime soon.



I'll bolt it on tomorrow and start in on some of the mechanical stuff before the snow run next weekend.
 
When I had to reshape my skids, I used a monster sledge for some spots, and for other large bends I cut about 1/2 way through the material with an angle grinder, easily bent the piece, and then rewelded.
 
I finally got some photos from the Reiter run last month. They are a little dark. I had to lighten them a little. Going to go play at Reiter again this Sunday.

He's a GSP. He's hanging out with us for a few months while some friends of ours are doing the shuffle with buying a home. Hope he likes to wheel.
 
Update: After the last Reiter Run I smashed my gas tank again. The needle never moved off of 3/4 of a tank. I figured it was time to do something about this. I started getting the parts together for the F-150 swap. I shopped for the right items for awhile and ended up purchasing brand new fuel sending and pump and fuel tank. I am using an Autometer digital gauge for fuel readings. It's still in the process but I am excited to get it done and back on the trail.

I swapped out the 1" body lift for a 2" body lift to help stuff the fuel tank a little higher as well as prepare to go flat belly sometime in the future by lifting the entire drive train.

I also order new suspension to hold me over until I have enough money to throw FJ80 axles under it. I need to wheel and it's going to take some cash to put real axles under it. After the FJ80 axles the suspension will go to our 2002 4Runner. If I ever get the shit shipped and delivered to my door, I'll install it and give you guys the details. I have started putting money away for the axles. I have a rough estimate of what it is going to cost. Probably my first born.

Yup, I know lots of people that are okay with running fuel tank that are worse than this. I'm the type of wheeler to not **** around with fuel tanks and damage.

New stuff. Was a very tight fit because I cut the frame back as far as possible when I built the rear bumper. Doesn't fit as far up into the far as I would have liked because of this:







Currently working on building a 1/4" thick skid plate for this. Hopefully it will hold up better. I am tired of repairing skid plates.

18 or 19 depending on the company. Factory says 18. I had to hammer in a couple spots so I might not get as much. We'll see. I should have it running tomorrow. A little wiring and filler neck left.
 
I'd like to move my tank to the back and remove the old one. Then use that space for batteries and air tanks.

How much was the tank?

Can't wait to hear how it works for you; I definitely need to do the swap here soon...I can't fill mine up anywhere near 3/4 of a tank. I have like a 125 mile range
 
Really loving what you've done to it. I don't see that color too often (if ever) and I really like it!

I'm really impressed with the fuel tank. Haven't even hardly thought about putting one back there.

I think the tank was around $100. The pump and sending unit was the expensive part. A lot of guys use a Toyota sending unit but I didn't want to cut into the tank and start frankensteining it. It's just asking for another point of failure. Fuel filler hose and 5/16" fuel hose got pretty expensive. Fuel filler hose was $23/per ft and 5/16" was $5.

Alright, it's finished. Just need to go beat on it. I wasn't planning on doing a full write up on this. If anyone has questions I am more than willing to answer them though.


Welding upside down sucks.


1/4" stacked on top of 1/4" on the front side. No room to add strapping metal to this side so I did this.


Did I mention how much I hate welding upside down?


Doesn't hang down too far.


Here is a couple things that will help:



  • Fuel Level Sender:
  • 1997 Toyota 4Runner:
  • Empty:160 Ohms
  • Full: 20 Ohms

  • 1994 Ford F-150:
  • Empty: 20 Ohms
  • Full: 160 Ohms

  • Fuel Sending Hardline will accept 5/16" Fuel Hose.
  • Both Emissions and Return Line are 1/4".
  • The Blue Wire is the 12V for the fuel pump.

I ordered this:Fuel Pump Sending Unit Module Rear for Ford F Series F150 F250 Pickup Truck | eBay
The brand is Spectre, which is the same brand as the tank. (Don't judge me for buying crap off eBay. I like ebay because it provides a lot of protection for the buyer.) It came with the pigtail and everything. Inspect the sending unit. Mine wasn't fully attached.

I didn't use a vent hose for the filler neck since it's 2" vice 1" now. My first fill up was a pain in the ass.

Suspension should be here tomorrow. BOSS Coilovers, Bilstein 5100 and OME 861s. 2002 is going to keep getting the hand me downs. I also ordered LCA Mount skids because I am too lazy to build them. I would much rather pay $100 bucks for someone else to do it. I am tired of cutting steel plate with an angle grinder.
 
I really love your rig. It's not excessively flashy with the huge headlight guards, excessive lights, etc. It's got a nice, rugged look that's not noticeably non-factory, except for those giant tires. But who cares? The tires are what make it badass!

Edit: By "not noticeably non-factory" I mean t it fits the look well, and it doesn't interrupt anything. I.E. It looks good lol.
 
That tank swap is awesome. Have you thought of putting a smaller tank where the stock tank was? You could probably get 10 gallons easy and then be able to have a great fuel range.

I'll be referencing this when I do the swap, very well done.

Half of the reason I wanted to move the fuel tank is so I can run a 4 link system in the rear. The fuel tank gets in the way of that. A smaller tank would be better but IMHO I don't think it would be worth the ass pain. I have seen a couple Toyotas with the factory fuel tank and the F-150. I bet it's awesome range but it's not really practical for where I am going with it.
