Largest Tire on Stock TE Rim.?

I went up one size - to a 275 70 R17 in the BFG AT TA KO, and no problems with rubbing at all. I think on the TE you can probably go two sizes, to a 285, but I don't know anyone that's done it yet.

Yes,Going up one size bigger then a stock 265/70/17 to a 275/70/17 affects speedo at 1.75% too slow. In other words ,when your speedometer reads 60mph you are actually going 62mph. When it reads 100mph you are actually going 98.25mph. I found this out here.Tire Size Calculator - tire & wheel plus sizing

Harp, you have that flopped. A larger diameter = the speedo reading lower than you're actually going. For each revolution of the wheel, you are covering more ground w/ a larger diameter tire. Most speedos are a little on the conservative side from the factory, though, so you should be pretty spot on after a slight upsize.

I have a feeling 285/70/70 will fit.... Looking at the pics from LWN with his 275's. A member here put 285s on and the tire shop said they rubbed. BUT he had aftermarket wheels. Not sure if they had different backspacing or not... No one to my knowledge has tried 285s on Stock TE wheels.

Huh? I think we are both saying the same thing.That's what I read directly off the tire size calculator that I gave a link to. For instance,I have 275's ,when my speedometer reads 60mph I should be going 58.9 mph according to the calculator. I tried my Garmin 760 on a trip when the cruise was set to 60 and the Garmin said I was going 58 by GPS.
But like you said there are so many variables. For instance ,my tread depth is almost 3/4 of an inch(18mm) new on my BFG's. What happens when I wear them down 10mm? I guess my speedometer will be on again?And then speedometer manufactureres and tire manufacturers, all have +/- tolerances that are not that strict.BFG's are said to run on the (-)smaller side.Goodyears on the (+)bigger side.
Another thing it changes is the mileage. When my odometer reads 98290 miles I will have gone 100000 miles in theory.Better resale value with bigger tires!!:naughty:

The only difference in the SR5/Limited and the TE fender wells is the front inner fender well on TE is 4 inches shorter in the front. It will probably rub higher then that when you have wheel compression with the wheels cut with 285's,like when you encounter a bump on a curve.You will still need to trim plastic for 285's to not rub. Wider aftermarket wheels would make the tire smaller,not bigger.
For back spacing,4.75" is the biggest back spacing I would run .. Stock on the 4Runner is 4.5 inches backspacing.The FJ rims without tires that I tried on my truck to check fit,and have 4.75" backspacing, had a little over 1/4 from hitting the UCA with the strut extended.
The tire size to get if you get aftermarket rims is a 305/65/17. BFG M/T KM2's in that size are what I want with 9 inch wide rims.They are a little smaller in size but alot wider then a 285/70/17 .It needs at least a 8.5 inch rim though so you have to go aftermarket which leads to a different set of concerns.

They will be my summer tires!

Thanks for the info Harper. Well researched. I'm liking the Toyo Open Country MT's I have read a ton of reviews on them. Everyone likes them and says they are very quiet. They look great only downfall is the weight. I still would like to see the 275 GY MT/R on the 4Runner. Not so sure about the white letter outline, or how it will do on pavement

I have the 275 GY MT/R on the 4Runner on mine and am loving them. The noise is a very low hum (which I kind of like) and I am getting around 18 mpg with a mix of highway and city driving. - I will post pics today! Promise!:reddance:

Awesome! Can't wait to see. I'm getting 19mpg with stockers. Do they have WOL? look good? I know those tires looked killer on the stock TE on the rubicon. I could go with the 265s which are a lower weight and load. I think C load vs the 275s which are E load. But i think the 275s fit the truck better.

Here are pics of my 17" Black Moto Metals with Wrangler MT/R's W/ Kevlar 275/70/17's
I have taken them through the snow and large puddles =) They have handled very well. I was told to get them siped, as that will help with icey conditions.

They fill out the wheel wells more and make the 275's look bigger.
They do look Sweet!
What is the Moto metal rim part numbers?
I'm not going to get these same ones ,just the fit info.
What width did you get? 8 inch or a 9 inch?
What offset ? stock is 4.5 inches
I take it you had to buy a new set of conical lug bolts since these are lug centric instead of the factory hub centric rims or did you get hub rings?

How loud? They are not that loud - They have a nice little hum that can be heard when on the highway but pretty quiet for an AT tire of it's stature.
How do they do on highway and pavement? these handle extremely well on the pavement, mud and snow. I need to get them siped for the icey driving but I am getting that done within the next few weeks.
Whats gas mileage like? I am driving in eco mode and am getting around 18 mpg with 50/50 mix of highway and city (not bad imo)
Do they ride rough? They are a little rougher than the stock tires but I really like the feel of them. It really feels like a truck now!:dancin:
I did have the Duratracs on for a few days but they were way too big. So, i am not sure I can give an accurate description of what the tires are like. I got greedy and thought I could throw 285s on and just have to cut some plastic trimming (not the case). I didn't want lift my truck this time around and think the 275 MT/R's are great tires and look pretty mean too! :bigok:

No rubbing ? No rubbing =) I had to cut a little of the front plastic but not too much.
What is the Moto metal rim part numbers? They are the 951's
