Leaking oil from valve covers AGAIN!

If you walk into the dealership you may just get RIPPED OFF.

The dealers here in San Diego charge 100% (for real) over MSRP on some parts.

While Internet dealers (real Toyota dealerships with Internet sales departments) sell for 20% under MSRP.

Here is what happened to me ....
Local: $30
Web: $10 (Camelback Toyota Online Parts)
MSRP: $15

After looking up the process online I demanded they come down in price but they refused to match Camelback's price. So I said match MSRP or I am not buying from here and instantly they matched MSRP which was half what they originally wanted.

All the Backyard mechanic's i've ever talked to / worked with, always used the gasket maker on the valve covers

That's why they are in the backyard, and not being paid to work on cars. Whether or not you should use FIPG, depends on the type of gasket.

Having torqued the valve cover bolts down way too tight in the past, the threads in the cylinder heads might be compromised at this point.

Be prepared to repair the threads. If it comes to that, I would recommend using Time-Sert inserts. Or in a pinch, Heli-coils.

I just let mine leak a little bit of oil. I'm not spending the money to have them leak again 6 months later.

I try and keep her in the best condition i can, if you rely on the rig to be reliable that is.

on a side note, i think the VC bolts had oil on them when i put them back in, so if i'm not mistake oil is a lubricant and may let the bolts work there way loose again after installation.....

As 02 SE stated, backyard mechanics need to stay in the backyard.

53in/lbs is the correct torque, which equates to 5ft/lbs give or take. Having worked on about 300+ cars in my life, I'd say 9ft/lbs for the valve cover is the highest torque I personally have ever encountered.

One could probably do 15 valve cover replacements on 5vz engines using one tube of FIPG; here more is definitely not better.

As Brian said be prepared to haggle the dealership for pricing. I honestly doubt they have everything in stock, so I'd call first. If they don't, and this 4runner isn't a DD, order from Camelback and spend the money you save on more fireworks.

I would recommend not using a torque wrench if, you do not know how to use one or if do not know the exact spec to torque the bolts on the valve cover I recently did mine and no oil leaks an yes, you should of wiped the bolts with a rag from any oil before installing that's what I did
