Like you I had a hard time getting my kit shipped. I paid for pre-stitching as well thinking it would make it much easier but looks like you had to take the airbag and stuff off anyway.

The airbag will need to come off regardless of how it is stitched on. The leather needs to be tucked and glued with contact cement to the end of the spokes under the airbag.

Airbag removal is very simple. One either side of the wheel there is a round cover about the size of a dime. Under them is a star screw. Undo those 2 screws, pop the bag off and disconnect the wiring harness. Just make sure you disconnect your negative battery terminal at least 10 minutes prior so the bag does not deploy.

This stitching option is available. It's the non-pre-stitched version. It is more time consuming than the pre-stitched version I choose. If I were to do it over I believe I would go this route. The stitching looks better and I believe more durable since the stitch goes through the leather as apposed to looping another stitch.

Honestly when I am driving I don't really notice the stitching that much since it is inside the wheel diameter.

Just mentioned that another good option is to take your car to the local upholstery place and get something like this done by a pro rather than ordering a DIY kit. Everything is negotiable. I cannot see this costing all that much more than the kit itself. Who knows, maybe I man way off. Out of curiosity sake now I want to inquire with my local auto and marine a upholstery place about recovering a steering wheel.

i was just busting you balls... you said something about getting defensive reactions and i couldnt resist stirring the pot lol.

i know i mentioned the dealer, only because i have inquired as to the cost or a replacement wheel(because my leather is deteriorating and in a couple spots the stitching is about to tear lose. i have not asked specifically about the steering wheel with an upholstery shop, but when i have inquired in the past about seats they were ridiculous... like $700 per seat(may as well go buy new seats). so yeah i guess i always could ask. but i was just throwing out the dealer cost because its what i knew for sure.

I too have inquired locally about interiors, I would agree that the top end of the range was ridiculous, so maybe the steering wheel is too. What a shame.


Dealer prices are quite greasy, I hate that they are free to set their own parts prices!!!

Seems I was way off. Just spoke to the upholstery guy and it was 350 for vinyl (apparently pretty close to leather in his opinion). I imagine closer to 6 all in for genuine leather. I would not do leather, devout vegan. I think I may actually go for the vinyl.. Not a terrible price, considering all the labour,.

An excellent point. In our environment however, where it routinely reaches -50 degrees c and lower every winter...vinyl has shown its merits!

Another option.
I'm on my 2nd Wheelskins. Works well, cheap and easy to install.
I put it right over the original as it make the wheel fatter for better grip as well.

I purchased a cover for mine a few years back... I forget where i got it from. when i get home from work i'll shoot a picture and see if i can find a receipt.

It was a pretty good cover it stitched up pretty tight too.
