LED Dome Light *pics*

Just got my blue LED dome light from Oznium. I'm very pleased with the purchase, nice and easy mod that makes a pretty big difference. Here's some pics from my shitty camera phone, I really should invest in a quality digital camera.

Which size did you get? I got the 5"X1.5" and I almost need my sunglasses when getting into my truck. I have blue as well. I might take some pictures tonight since I don't work, but here they are in daylight.

Since he's got the 3rd Gen, it'd say it's the 2.0"x2.0" That's what I had in my 02. I should've went with blue in my 08, the white is alright, but I loved all the attention the blue LED's got in my 02 everytime I opened my doors.. lol

Yeah I like how the "Cool White" looks with the blue tint, Oznium has a picture of it on their site. I might order the Cool White down the road, or ask for it for my bday or something, so I can have the option of rotating b/w that and the blue.

And yes, Fo_Sheezy is correct, I got the 2.0"x2.0" Ultra Thin. Wasn't really a problem to stuff it in there. I just used a twist-tie to bundle up the 2 wires and kinda stuck them up behind the bulb, and there was enough room for the LED pad.

Has anyone figured out how to access the map lights and what bulbs they use?

I just posted this in the LED lighting thread, but I'll post it here too as it is more to the point.

For the dome light (and rear cargo light), I couldn't recommend this one more: TaskLED Dome Light module (link in my sig also). This guy is great (I know him from another forum), and he is a Land Cruiser buff. The module is well worth the money, and is LEAPS and BOUNDS better than the others you might get somewhere like V-LEDs. Search for reviews on the IH8MUD forums if you don't believe me.

I'm not sure, but it might even work for the map lights. I went with a LED array (one RED and one WHITE) for my map lights, but the dome light module might work for the maps too.

The single LED in the TaskLED module is FAR brighter than any of the el-cheapo arrays out there, I promise! Color is cool white.

To get the map light covers off, you pry on them from one side, just like the dome light. Just use something with a wide, thin blade to keep from marring the clear plastic.

I'll try and get some pics for you guys tonight.

The blue was like that in my 02 4Runner, you couldn't look at it for more than a second or two, but to me... the brighter it is, the better! :bigok:

I haven't noticed my light being too bright. For me, it's just right.

So I just pulled the cover off my map lights and removed one of the bulbs. It looks like this:

What kind of LED bulb would work as a replacement?

I bought the 25-LED and 48-LED arrays that can be found about 2/3 of the way down the page HERE. The array is the same for several different bulb types (can also be found HERE and HERE), but there is a plug at the end that you change out for different bulbs. Same array in all cases, just different terminal plugs.

HOWEVER, I have had a lot of problems with these arrays. The 48-LED array I received had the wires to the plug hooked up COMPLETELY wrong (and they claim they test all products prior to shipping) to the point that it wouldn't light up at all. It was because they had the negative wire in the middle of the connector where it doesn't hook into anything. The 48-LED array can be used in low or high (brightness) mode. I had to pull the wires out of the plug (plug is sililar to what you find inside of a computer chassis) and put them back in making sure they were in the right order.

At one point, I used one of these arrays as a dome light in my other vehicle, but LEDs started going out right and left. They use relatively low-quality LEDs in these things. I think starting the car with the door open sends enough of a voltage spike to the LEDs that it kills them. (Not a problem with the TaskLED dome light module since it is electronically regulated) I think the 25-LED arrays are better, but buyer beware. If you don't have any LED or electronics background in order to troubleshoot potential problems yourself, forget about them helping you.


ANYWAY... I would suggest buying the LED arrays at V-LEDs. HERE's a link to a white one, and HERE's a link to red one from them. They're CHEAPER at V-LEDs, and after my customer service experieince at Autolumination, I would NOT go back.

I can't recall off the top of my head, but I believe that is called a bayonet base. Not sure of the number right now (it might be on the bulb base).

edit: Yep. Bayonet. Ba9s to be exact.

edit2: I bought these (the 25-LED array about 1/4 way down) and put the array into the fixture, hovever, V-LEDs has this and this for cheaper, and won't be nearly as bright.

It wasn't easy (not terribly hard either), but I made them fit. I'll try to get pics tonight. I seem to recall having to trim a little bit of plastic, and maybe even take out the Aluminum reflector, but I just don't remember right now. I'll get back to you tomorrow.

They're awesome bright, and flood the front end with light. You DON'T want to use the white one while driving!!! :bugeye: That's what the red one is for though! :bigok:

I went about it the same way you recommended to get to the dome light. I was able to wedge a flat-head screwdriver under the plastic lens and pry it off. It may be different on a '98 but you should be able to see two notches where the plastic lens clips into the map light module. That's where I wedged my screw driver and just popped it off.
