LED Headlight Bulbs - Check em out!

A little birdy told me that these CXA bulbs are going to be discontinued in favor of completely new tech. / design in a few months. I was supposed to get ahold of these for a photo comparison last week but it is not happening.... The stuff they have out now is great by all means, but word on the street is their next LED headlight replacement bulb will be truly impressive. ETA on the new ones is several months down the road.

My suggestion if you are looking for brighter, DOT compliant lights is look at HIR bulbs. See my build thread for info. The most impressive plug and play Incan. Replacement you can get while staying at save current draws.

It is only 200lm more and different fan setup. I spoke to one of the VLED’s guys today and he said that they working on something brighter. It will be several months before they post it on the web site tho.:crybaby:
I don’t know what to do. Get this set while they have 15% OFF or go with Philips HID. :confused:

I heard that philips doesn’t make HIDs anymore, but you still can find some from chana.

Do you know what the beam pattern and cutoff are like with LEDs? 2000LM is plenty enough for me as long as it "focuses" similar to halogens (not like non-projetor HIDs).

I don’t have an experience with this bulbs, yet. I should get my pair this saturday tho. I’ll let you know then. SOcalTRAIL might have an answer for you before then.
By the way, I would like to know that as well

So to my disappointment, both the new H11 and 9005 CXA bulbs will not fit the 2010+ 4Runner. I lit them up and they looked nice, quality build, etc... but there are a few distinct issues with them:

1 - The H11 bulb will not fit the passenger side due to the limited space between the headlight housing and the chassis. The bulb is simply too long.

2 - This above issue isn't as much an issue on the driver's side, but the diameter of the tip of the bulb is slightly too large to fit through the opening of the headlight housing to install. I did everything I could to get it in without damaging the bulb but it simply would not fit. Given issue #1 above, I didn't want to have to pull the headlight housing to see if it works - too much effort for a bulb.

3 - The 9005 bulb fit into the stock opening no problem - there was also plenty of room to work with on both sides. The issue was in the design of the bulb. There is not enough space between the three nubs and the base of the bulb to allow it to turn in the housing and lock into place. When looking at the OEM bulb as a comparison it becomes very clear that this space has been reduced on the VLED bulb.

Anyway, I am returning them both. Unless VLED changes their design to emulate the "L" shape of the stock bulb or creates a reduced length design (as well as addressing the size issue of the tip) I don't see how this will ever fit the 2010+ T4R.

Pretty disappointing...

That's a real bummer man! Once you mention it, in hindsight the lack of clearance behind the low beam is real obvious, but I would've never thought about that either until it was too late also. Glad you are able to return them.

May I ask...exactly what do you mean by the redesigned 9005 bulb is shorter, and what prevents you from locking it in place? Any pictures? Thanks! :usa2:

I didn't take any pics...but you can see the light here

Now imagine this example below is the all aluminum - straight version like the pic above... Basically it is the combination of the space between the three nubs and the body as well as the thickness of the nubs...it would not allow me to turn and lock once inserted into the highbeam opening. I tried it straight on, at a slight angle, adding force...nothing would get it to bite in order to turn. I also didn't want to break it doing something that should be pretty simple.

I didn't even think about the clearance - even having a bulb die on that exact side this Monday. You sort of assume that the application will fit...unfortunately I was wrong. Yes - glad I can return.
 
Great. Just got mine today. I have the older high beams but had him hold off for these newer ones. Guess a few of us will have to return them...

Did you call them? Wondering if there is any way to get the older ones which supposedly worked... perhaps the new one will?

Try your's out and see if mine were an anomaly...I did not call them as the instruction for returns are on their site and don't include calling. I didn't want to trade down to the old model as the passenger side spacing is going to be an issue no matter what and honestly I don't want to keep spending my time returning product at my cost.

Hence why I ask if you'll try :biggrin2:

Unfortunately can't try until my truck is done... still waiting as a wrong part number was sent for the re-gear of the front diff. I should have it next week if you are willing to wait until then, but I went and looked at the lamp and my goodness it does have a huge tip and beefy back end. I have the older 9005 and socal got his in so I didn't think I'd have a problem...
