LED Swap (Lights+Tools+Steps+Pictures)

This is a great post. I used the examples and links to buy a kit from ebay. I did my 4runner and my wife's Highlander last night.

I replaced the halogen bulbs with the LED set from yitamotor on eBay. Good deal for a bit less than a buck a bulb. MUCH brighter & whiter than the originals.

Some observations:
1) Had to totally remove the complete dome light assembly (because the bulb holder popped loose from the bezel) so I could fit that bigger bulb in the socket.
2) yitamotor's bulbs seem to be polarity sensitive, so be sure to reconnect & test each light BEFORE re-installing each light assembly. You may need to flip the bulb to get it to work.
3) I found two different assemblies in the door lights: the fronts had a totally clear assembly while the rears had the same grey plastic assembly like the one shown in the Precision video. Looks like the clear ones are yet another cost-saving measure by Toyota.
4) The Precision LED video on youtube was most helpful. I took a few notes and everything went flawlessly.
5) Found LOTS of (off-road) dust on the INSIDE of the license plate light lenses AND the tailgate light lenses. Surprised the license plate lights could even be seen at night, as the lens was totally covered.

You can take just the clear lens off of the dome light housing which in my case made it much easier to install that press fit festoon bulb!

I bent the "spring" side connection in so it was almost flat and that allowed the bigger bulb to fit so that the pointed ends of bulb were aligned with and held by the holes in the metal tabs.

Then I bent it back out to hold the smaller bulb I have in there now. I'm not sure how many times I want to bend that since I'm a bit afraid that metal fatigue will cause it to break.

I have a panel with one of the spring loaded dummy festoon connectors to try and when I do that I'll take a picture of the dome light without the lens so I can annotate it.

No, just all the interior bulbs, and the bulbs for the license plate lights, plus a few spares.

Even if some of those "spares" would fit in the backup lights, I personally would want something brighter.

I tried that first, but while trying to insert that LONG bulb, the bulb holder part popped loose from the bezel, which meant that the entire assembly had to be removed to a) get that damned bulb in, and b) re-attach the bulb holder to the bezel. Not much extra effort.
 
'15 TE LED from ebay

I just did my '15 TE with the LED kit from ebay and came out great. It was much simpler because I don't have the puddle lights. I too had to work that larger bulb in the dome carefully. My kit had back ups lights included. Make sure you test the bulbs before you re-install. I kinda wanna do the running/turn signal lights now but I have a feeling there is a little more involved than a plug-n-play like this was.

What's the current recommendation for a BRIGHT backup light??
 
The ones that came from the kit on ebay were plenty bright. They equaled the stock solution but were very white IMO. I'm sure there are brighter ideas out there but this was a very compatible swap.

Sadly..... my first mod to my 2015 SR5P is a "failure"

I wanted brighter back-up lights, so I ordered these:

They are definitely "whiter", but it is NOT "brighter". :-(

Left is the new white LEDs, right is the stock 921:

Now, I need to hunt for some brighter 921-sized brighter LEDs....

Any recommendations?

The premium set from Precision LED seems to have everything you need (tools and premium lights). However, I did not want to spend $150+ for something that could be purchased for $30 elsewhere. So I decided to keep looking. First, I ordered a set from Amazon that was not nearly bright enough. Then I ordered a set from eBay that was brighter, but were not the exact color I was looking for.

Finally, I found these:

If you have a 2010 - 2013 5th Gen:
13 Pcs Deluxe White LED Lights Interior Package Kit for 2003 2012 Toyota 4Runner | eBay

If you have a 2014 - 2015 5th Gen:
18pcs Deluxe White LED Bulbs for 2014 2015 Toyota 4Runner Interior Package Kit | eBay

This was the only listing I found that shipped from the US and included a set of “luxury” lights. I did a lot of reading on LEDs and decided that as long as you purchase an SMD of the newer kind 5630 or 5730, you should be OK. The eBay set listed above includes the 5630 chips. These are super bright and a nice 6000K pure white color. The other sets I returned had the 5050 chips and there is no comparison. The 5630 are truly three times brighter just like they claim. This is the list of parts that you need (at least for the 2014 LE):

A total of 12 “T10” lights and three “31mm” festoon type lights
Map Lights (2 x T10)
Dome Light (1 x 31mm)
Door Courtesy Lights (4 x T10)
Vanity Mirrors (2 x T10)
Trunk Rear Hatch (2 x 31mm)
License Plate (2 x T10)
Side Mirror Puddle (2 x T10)

Just wondering if anyone has bought/installed either of these for a 2013? I know the OP said the first kit would be good for 2010-13 but the ebay listing says through 2003-2012, and the other for '14-15. I've emailed the seller but haven't heard anything yet.
 
To a certain extend, I prefers ordering from Amazon due to the fact that they have "reviews" from actual purchasers/customers. The problem with ebay is that there weren't any reviews on the particular listing, so, it may not be what you think you will get....
