We're really getting hammered here in NE, IL today. Now I am not unfamiliar with 4 wheel drive. My 96 Blazer(which was totaled last month) had it, my wife's Durango has it and our 325xi has AWD. And comparatively they are all pretty much crap compared to the 4Runner, in the snow. I do not have any idea why this vehicle performs so well in the snow. But the snow was as close to a non event as can be expected. My only concern out there were the other drivers, whose vehicles were slipping and sliding all around me. On my way in I cut through the adjacent subdivision and was running the right side through the snow drifts just for fun.

You know when I first came here, I just came to gain some info as I had just totalled my Blazer and was doing research on a vehicle. And while I appreciated the depth of the info, the euphoria surrounding this vehicle, I must admit, sounded like it bordered on the fanatical. And now I find myself worse than all of you. I am so absolutely amazed at this vehicle and for the price paid I feel like I stole it.

It is absolutely no wonder to me that this vehicle can be packaged with Lexus attrributes and demand 15k more. It's just plain worth it. It's that damned good.

I mean do you ever stop being amazed by this thing?

Welcome to the club! It is amazing, even after almost 3 years.

The snow just started coming down here so I'll have to run some errands tonight just to get my fix.

I've had my new 4Runner for two months, and I still find myself driving along thinking, 'jeeze this is a great rig!'
I couldn't be happier with it. I actually look forward to running errands and driving to business meetings.

I just had my Revo's installed today and loved driving around. We've had probably 4 inches this afternoon and the 4R handles so much better with the Dunlops off!
 
I'm going on three years now, and that feeling is still there! I was driving through nine inches of snow last week with drifts up to eighteen inches! This thing is amazing!
 
I would post pics but it is nightfall and I just got in from shoveling. I love this car and it handles great in the snow. But, my only gripe is that ABS is way too sensitive. I dropped a friend off some food and was on my way back home and came to a stop sing that was uphill, and lightly tapped on the brakes and all of a sudden the familiar ABS sound came and then I couldn't stop right and then the ABS makes your car slide somewhat. On wet surfaces ABS usually works fine, but on snow it just doesn't work like I think it should.

There's one shifter position I don't think too many people use in snow: N!
Found it works better if I pop it into neutral if the ABS starts chirping at low speeds (during the final slowdown and stop.) This takes the need for braking forces away from trying to stop the driveline to just stopping the wheels (and your momentum.)

I finally got to try my 4runner in some snow today. Central PA really hadn't had any sig snow yet. I played in some parking lots not yet plowed and it was awesome. Also, couldn't believe how easily it went up hills with about 4 inches of snow. That is only 4Hi, I haven't even played with 4Lo or locked the diff yet. I love my 4runner!!!

Lock the differential and do some 4wd power slides...simply awesome!:zoom:
 
I had fun today in the Chicago suburbs, too! The 4Runner handles great in the snow!!

VSC is a good thing. Sometimes I took a corner a little too fast, just to see how the computer would deal with it. A couple of other times, it came on without my trying! As soon as it starts beeping, the computer takes over and straightens ouf the truck immediately! I was never in a situation where I couldn't couteract the rear end sliding out on my own, but the computer did it faster than I could.

I thought the ABS might be a little over sensitive, too, but as the day wore on, I saw that some of the blowing snow turned to ice. I think the road was more slick than I realized at the time, so that's why the ABS was doing its thing.

Ok, here's a picture taken on the 4th level of our parking garage. They don't plow it in the winter and it's the best I could do with my cell phone. I'd guess about 6" of snow.

I like to consider it a Cult. Have you tried the kool-aid by the way? :cool:

While the 4Runner handled itself fine, I think I'm getting near the end of life on my Dunlops. It looks like it'll be time for some new rubber soon.

My dunlops are getting bald, but damn, I still passed cars in the snow on the way to work yesterday morning. Most of them were driving explorers and trailblazers and going super slow. :awais:
 
What's really scary is when the people in Expeditions, Tahoes, and Explorers are driving way too fast for conditions. They own an SUV, so they're invincible. That's how they end up in the ditch.

What is even more scary is people driving too fast for conditions on VERY WORN tires.
I saw one Explorer today drive right off the road (for no apparent reason) into deep snow and get stuck.
This Explorer's 2WD and all weather tires were not going to get it out of that snow.

My 4Runner with it's Blizzak Snow Tires got me to work and back home without any problems.
Other than a few idiots, I actually had an enjoyable commute in the 4Runner today.

I saw a Pathfinder that probably rolled over and back on its wheels in a ditch this weekend up to the Sierras. The rear roof where the cargo area is caved in and side glass were blown out. Too many people drive too fast in poor wet winter conditions like they do when it's dry.
