Hi Guys,

I am looking to lift my new 2016 Trail. This is going to be run for 2 maybe 3 years max while I save for some big investments, one being a serious suspension upgrade. In the mean time I need to find something suitable for light-medium wheeling in the Desert Southwest and Colorado maybe Moab a bit, oh and towing of different toys (jetskis, quads, boat etc.). Right now I am considering the following:

1. 3" Lift W/ Bilstein 5100 Front Coilovers FJ/4Runner/GX
Don't need to have adjustable coilovers as this is just a place holder.

2.OME Full Suspension System For 2010+ 4Runners
Always heard good things about OME.

3.BILSTEIN 24-196499/33-187174 FRONT/REAR 5100 SERIES SHOCK KIT 10-15 FJ & 4RUNNER | eBay
or
Bilstein Height adjustable front and matching 5100 Rear shocks
Just keep it simple and go tires until I'm ready?

Each has an advantage and disadvantage. I am just looking to gather some opinions beyond my own. If you have other suggestions I am open as well. Thanks Guys!

Well I went with the Bilsteins 5100 all around and spacers in the rear. (Check my sig)
My reasoning is:
This was the best economical option to achieve what I wanted.
((Which depends on you intended use))
I don't plan any serious offroading, just occasional used at best. Camping, beach etc...

I didn't go adjustable C/O's because When does anyone have time to or the need to ever change the adjustments? (Once you set them more than likely they will be just like any other struts, and they are just too much work to maintain. I barely like to washing my rig. The hell if I'd be under the truck cleaning and preventing those puppies from getting wasted cosmetically.
I had them on my Tacoma. So I'm over it!:eyebrows:

The ride quality is great with the stock springs and the 5100's. Prefect for my needs.

So I would really say that it alls depends on what you want for your ride!!
What I like may not be what you like.
So it really doesn't make any difference what me or anyone else says. At the end of the day it's your ride!
Everyone will be different.

So do it wisely and determine what you ride will be used for and build it for your needs!

Tons of great options out there!
 
I'm prone do doing things once, and a stock 4runner is damn capabale. Are you planning on installing yourself or having a shop donor? That right there could negate any kind of savings if you have to pay a shop to do it twice.

I'd say put money in legitimate tires and sliders, then do whatever your suspension plans are later.
 
Totally agree, I was just hoping to gather some thoughts from others that may have done a particular setup.

Right now I am leaning towards just the 5100 Billies for a while.

However, I am strongly considering coils as well as I will be doing the San Juans in Colorado in August, then Moab I believe in September for Rock Therapy with the Taco guys. Plus the aforementioned toys and camping and off-roading.

I would be doing all the work myself. Doing the work is half the fun of going out to play! Plus, you need to know how to fix your rig on the trail if necessary.
 
Oh just saw you're in Tucson, I lived there for 7 years! I'd kill for a beyond bread right about now.

Cool well ya if you're intent on it just read up on the options.. everyone has their favorite. Old man emu can ride rough if you don't get the load capacity right, I'd probably steer you towards a toy tech/bilstein setup.

Good ol Beyond Bread. Surprised you're not craving a Sonoran Dog or Eegee's more!

Yeah I loved my last billie/toy tech setup which is why I put it as option 1 :)
 
If you end up going with the Bilstein 5100, a vendor here [MENTION=120150]TotalAutomotiveLV[/MENTION] has the front/back set for 360 shipped. I picked up a set a few weeks ago, that is the best price I could find.

Made Sonora dogs while camping last week .. wasn't quite the same though.

Yes, front has 0, .85", 1.75", and 2.5" setting I just had mine installed on Fri. 1.75" front with a 1" spacer in the back.

Just a heads up I think the max without front spacers on the 5100 is 2.5" - if you are set on 3 you may need to check out cva options.

Those shocks are awesome though and worth it even just for the ride improvement

Edit I misread your first post. All those options will be great - buy the best that won't irritate you later and you'll be fine

Ordered and got them in! Going on today with some Edit: Wheeler's Offroad T12 rear coils. Main I LOVE T4R nothing but cool people and venders!

Stumbled on the forum over a decade ago with my 3rd and I'm so happy its only grown :)

Interested to hear your thoughts on this set up. I'm looking at doing a slight lift on my '16 Trail (with KDSS), and think going with coil overs would be a bit much for my purposes...

I'll definitely post an update once I get to wear it in and use it! Right now for work all I ever do is :plane: everywhere and rent a :car:...

I have the same set up and intent so I am interested also. I just received the full 5100 set and need to choose my rear lift option...

I've heard of the T13 coils but not T12. Is this a coil I have missed or a typo?
