Limited GPS Hack

Has anyone figured out anything with the GPS yet? My buddy has a lexus and he got the GPS to work even while moving. He said something about disconnecting the wire to the tachometer. Also he can play movies in his GPS.

The nav/radio unit is made by Eclipse, or Fujitsu..I think one owns the other. Toyota uses them and that's why when you buy a eclipse unit, it's actually plug and play if you happen to drive a Toyota/Lexus/scion.

But anyways on to the point.. In my old Scion I installed an eclipse nav radio, and upon installation if you grounded out the parking brake wire for the radio, it would work while driving. Essentially, you're fooling the radio to think the vehicle isn't moving because it sees the parking brake on. This didn't affect the operation of the gps or anything else, just allowed you to have all features available while moving. Someone needs to aquire a wiring diagram so we can figure out which wire we need to either disconnect or attach to ground

I saw this ad over on the ToyotaNation.com site for unlocking a 2010 4Runner OEM Navigation DVD to work and operate while moving:

Override GPS navigation | Lexus | Toyota

Click on the Toyota product page and it still shows 2009 as the latest 4Runner year, but the separate ad said that they have hacked the 2010 4Runner Navi.

I emailed the company for more info. Will post what they respond with.

All I say is watch out. If you do this and have an accident and they notice this........ well you can figure out the rest. Obviously a fender bender wouldn't lead to a full accident investigation etc, but if you end up with a fatality or serious injury to the other party it won't help your situation that you have a modded GPS system that can also play movies.

I would love to do this in my other vehicle (no nav in the 4Runner) but have refrained solely from the point of what if I am in an accident. I wouldn't use the movie function when driving, but if I unlock that would be available and that is not a good thing

Um, no. That's like saying you should watch out for just having a cell phone IN your car while you're driving. Any joe shmo out there can install a nav in their dash and use it while driving. Also, all those gps's that you see suction cupped to peoples windshields? Those can be used while driving.

Cell phones in the car is not illegal in most states and you can directly prove if it was in use when the accident happened (note recent accidents by trains etc where they were texting).

Playing movies up front in your car is illegal in many many states. Messing with the nav system would not be illegal which is why I said that the same hack on my other car opens up the DVD player which is why I don't do it. If it only did the navigation system then I would do it in a heartbeat.

So to summarize if you have the navsystem and the entertainment system in the back and your hack makes it play dvd's up front then I wouldn't do it

if it just opens up your nav system - heck yeah install it no doubt about it
