Little Black Box??

BR4Runner

Recently after pulling out of my driveway, the fan in my 90 4Runner exploded sending plastic fan parts throughout the engine compartment, through the radiator and actually piercing the hood. It was the strangest things I'd ever witnessed...
One of the casualties of this was a black box between the air intake and the engine itself. I think it's a reservior of some sort, probably to keep water from getting into the engine. Can anyone help me find one of these? Or maybe just what it's called?? My mechanic couldn't find one and since it's a road vehicle worrying about water isn't a problem. However dust and dirt can get in and it's making a noise I can't stand to listen to anymore...

Any help? Thanks

I think you are referring to a resonance chamber in the duct leading to the throttle body. It's not a critical item in itself, but now air is entering the engine that is not metered by the AFM . Worse still, dust is getting in the engine, too. You'll wear out internals much faster, if you dont have filtered air. At least use some duct tape to close the holes in the chamber, until you can find a replacement.

BTW - my fan exploded once, too. Took out the shroud and the battery. I feel your pain.
