Long-Term Build

Awesome!
Love the truck! A work mate had a similar 4Runner and it kept on going but rust was the ever present enemy! I admire the lengths you've gone to to preserve this 4r!

The pics and vids are great! What a surprise, its raining!! I grew up in North Van and spent loads of time camping/boating and hiking in and around Whistler, Alouette Lake, Chehalis Lake, Sasquatch Provincial Park --- beautiful country!!! I just had enough of the freakin' rain, so I moved to the Okanagan 6 years ago! We have great spots here too, just drier!

I decided not to install the front diff yet since we had a day trip planned for Saturday. Up to Harrison Lake and Sunrise Lake, northeast of Mission, BC. About 15 trucks alltogether, and at least three quarters were Toyotas.

Will get on the diff for the next outing.

Finally getting around to installing my high-pinion ARB front 3rd.

The 3rd all PORd and ready to install.

Ready to tear into it

All apart and looking pretty clean

I was a bit nervous about getting into the axle since I haven't had it apart before. BCC went through it for the SAS about two years ago and it all looks great inside. Longfields were a pain to pull out since there is minimal clearance but it all worked out. I will need to clearance the axle housing since the MC high-pinion thirds are larger than stock. Also have to install the cap screw stud eliminator kit. Hope to have it together tomorrow to get to Hale Creek next weekend.

This is one of the bigger things I still want to do to mine, too. I like the idea of a high-pinion set-up, and I want to swap out the full-time Lockright for a proper ARB selectable diff. I wonder if the Trail-Gear model I've been looking at will have the same clearance issue you mentioned? I'll have to look into the cap screw eliminator kit--hadn't planned on that. Please detail any other problems/changes you run into. Congrats on your 2nd place in the polls--your buddy Slacker's gorgeous rig is some tough competition!

Thanks, it was pretty close... except for the Trekker :)

Will post up progress of the diff swap. My front DS may be a bit too long at full flex but I'll see. I may have a shorter one or parts around, anyway.

Trail gear thirds should be fine for a Toyota mini axle (85).... My buddy ordered his from trail gear and they fit fine. He also decided to order their axle housing and he had minor fitment issues.

Thanks, Corey. I need to get it clean and put them in the right place. Will try to get to it this week.

I trashed one of the bearing pre-load nut washers and had to get a replacement. Thanks to BC4x4.com user nickmak for helping me out. Back to it!

I got the worst part done, I think. The stud eliminator kit went in without a problem. Good idea to chase the threads with a tap first. I also put thread sealant on the cap screws before torquing them down. I had to grind a bit of the diff to clear the closest u-bolt and I had to enlarge a couple of the bolt holes to help it go in.

DS angle looks good. Will have to check that it's not too long when stuffed. I have about 2" up compression left in the DS.

Now to get the rest back together. It 'should' all bolt together easily. :)

So tell me about your fiberglass. Are those the flared panels or the high clearance? What's your WMS, and how well do you fill the fenders?

Awesome build! I recently installed a MC high pinion Yukon Zip locker diff but have yet to test it. This week I am installing dual cases w/ 4.7's and Dave'z triple sticks. Love your rig man, it doesn't look like you have updated in a while but keep up the great work.

I haven't done a lot of work on the truck lately but I have had it out wheelin every month or so. Work has been too busy. There's something wrong with using work as an excuse to not work on my truck...

The back end is working alright but the 12" 5150 shocks are too long in the stock location with the 4" TG springs. I will eventually put in a new cross member but, for now, a change to 10" shocks will do. I also still have the stock exhaust. It was a 'lifetime parts and labour' replacement from Toyota in 1989. I think I've had 4 free ones since then. They don't offer that option anymore. :)

I had cut off the stock tailpipe to clear the relocated TG shackle and wanted to fix it. I picked up a universal 45 deg. elbow and pipe from Canadian Tire and extended the pipe, keeping it as high as possible.

I wanted to keep it as close to stock as possible so I cut, shortened, flipped and re-welded the stock hanger to keep the rubber hanger. Here it is after using POR 15 Metal Prep.

And finished

Helps with the clearance and is still legal.

I still need to extend the parking brake cable supports so the cable doesn't drag on the spring pack and the shock boot. Will post a picture with the 10" shocks. I switched from 5150s to 5100s to save a bit of space. Will go back to the 12" later.

Those are the first set of Corey's (www.toyotafiberglass.com) Hi Clearance panels. There is a ton of clearance to the fenders. The front tires will touch the floor pan pinch weld if fully stuffed, even thought the axle was moved forward 2".

I am running a stock IFS rear axle and a stock 85 or so front axle with 1.5" spacers. The rear tires are covered and the fronts are close. I will have to check what wheels I have. They are 15" x 8" and the tires are 36 x 12.5 x 15 TSLs. They are just under 35" diameter. I could easily run 37s but I don't want to increase the risk of breaking parts. Maybe later...

I like the look and the fenders will look more full as the springs settle. I also added a 1" BL so I could bolt on the sliders without hitting the floor or the rockers. It also made the triple stick install possible.

Wow - whats the backspace on your wheels?

For reference, I'm running an IFS rear and the stock 85 front with spacers too, and my 255/85s on a 16x7 wheel with 4.5 backspace are just barely covered by my stock fenders/quarters. I want to go to the high clearance panels you've got, but I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to get 5-6 inches wider without running STUPID spacers. That's why I'm picking your brain. :)

KidV, sorry this took so long. I think they're Allied 97 Chrome wheels (until I blasted and POR'd them) with 4.75" BS. I haven't had time to take one off and measure it. I need to check my front wheel bearings soon so I'll confirm then.

No real changes lately. Looking at 4.7 gears for the rear t-case and also at a Softopper. I need a lottery win... :)

Also had to remove the AC belt as the tensioner bearing is fried. Toy dealer here wants $200 for the pulley! looks like about $30 online from the US for a real Toy part. Geez...

Cool, thanks. I must be missing something, because the wheels I've got are right around the same backspace, and I don't sit anywhere near as wide as you. That's ok, it'll be a good excuse to bolt up a Tacoma elocker housing in the rear and Rock Assault in the front. :D

You've already got duals, right? Do the topper before you do the 4.7 gears. Freedom from that fiberglass top is a wonderful thing. Keep me in mind if you win the lottery tho, I need a new soft top too!
