Looking for 5th gen feedback

Hey everyone,

I am currently looking to upgrade my 4th gen 08 SR5 to a 5th gen 4Runner. I live in Vermont and 4Runner's handle the snow like nothing else I have driven. There are two 5th gen's for sale at the same dealership

2010 SR5 with 71k miles, CPO for $25k
2012 SR5 with 71k miles, CPO for $25k

The price is great on both, but that many miles worry me. What do you guys think? Should I just drive my 4th gen for 10 more years or jump into a 5th gen. Thanks!

Well 71k is still a baby for a yota truck

71k in two years on the 2012 though wow but possibly been a lot of highway miles so maybe not that bad.

Assuming condition is the same and neither was hauling a trailer most of it's life... I'd take the '12 one for sure from those two.
Though keep in mind, those prices aren't a ton less than new. I used to have the mind set that I would/should only buy used... but with some of the vehicles we've been buying (Toyota, Honda, Subaru), the 1-2 year old used draw nearly as much as a new one.

How many miles do you have on your 4th Gen? I would say keep what you know, unless you have a ton of miles on it. My 5th Gen did amazing in last winter's snow, even with the stock bridgestones, however the 5th Gen's Part Time 4WD doesn't have a center diff like your 4th gen.

71k miles for $25k is alot, even if it is a toyota. Just think of how many miles it will have on it once it is paid off...

My recently purchased 2012 had 55,000 on it. Pretty much all highway from what I could tell and the Carfax history showed service at almost every 5,000 on the dot. :shrug:

Coming from a non-Toyota perspective though it took me a couple of weeks (2) to get over the "high" mileage and pull the trigger. Happy I did though!


Back to OP though: Are the specs all the same w/r to options? I'd lean 2012 probably either way though. I'm not sure how Vermont's prices compare to down here a little further south, but with almost 20k less miles mine was about $28,500 before TTT, etc. if you need something to compare to.

I agree, with one caveat - I'd get another both and look the frames over carefully for rust. Assuming equal or better condition I would go '12.

lots of great feedback...thanks everyone!! My 08 only has 50k miles on it; I don't drive it much as I only live 3 miles from work and the girlfriend has a plug in Prius that we take on long road trips (I hate driving the Prius but it gets 60/70 miles to the gallon on the highway).

Both have the exact same features plus some extras like sunroof, roof racks, etc. The frames do take a beating in VT from the winter, so I will be checking those.

Price wise, Toyotas are expensive up here. Same dealership has a 12 SR5 with 25k miles on it for $34k....which I can buy a new one for. RIDICULOUS!!!!!

With only 50K miles on your '08, I'd keep it. Barely broken in for a 'Yota and you know the history of the vehicle. Just my $0.02.

Everything's expensive here in DC so I know the feeling. I was originally looking at a 2012 at Carmax with 8k miles on it. Was listed at 32,000. Associate showed me a new 2014 and it was 34k with virtually identical options. Crazy really. (Carmax had new on lot because it was a Toyota dealer owned by Carmax...kind of confusing.)

i love my 5G, but if you only have 50k on your '08 and it's relatively trouble-free i'd just keep it—forever.

comparing prices on this forum is sketchy; people from all over chiming in and regional economics wildly vary. fact is, New England ain't cheap.

also: personally, i could never stomach the thought of getting into a car payment (however nominal) or shelling out cash to step into a higher mileage, used vehicle. just couldn't do it.

I would not trade in a car that has 50k of your miles for 71k of someone elses, unless it was to save money. You haven't told us, nor do we need to know, but if you are selling your 08 for more than $25k, that's the only reason I would consider doing it.
