Looking for a camping tool - Fire ring with stackable pot

I'm looking for a fire-ring that has a stackable pot with it. Preferably with the ring sliding over the outside of the pan for storage, so it keeps the soot covered inside from dirtying up things around it, while still being able to use the inside of the pot for storage.

Kinda off topic, but with a good number of campers in the 5th gen group I thought I'd start of asking here.

That's pretty interesting, but not quite what I had in mind. I may have to model it and post a picture.

I'm thinking a ring you can set on the ground, has an opening to feed small pieces of wood through. The ring shields your fire from view and (mild) drizzle, as well as keeps the open fire from spreading. The pot sits on a curved lip on top of the ring. The curved lip allows the slightly smaller dimension pot to sit on top of the ring.

When done cooking, the cooled off ring can be slid over the top of the pot, making the hole setup easily packable. The "dirty" side of the ring is between the ring and the pot, thus keeping your pack otherwise clean.

I'm sure this makes about as much sense as mud :) I'll post a pic of the concept later tonight...

also not exactly what you're looking for, but i love my Son of Hibachi. super '70s, but super effective and convenient, too. it is its own charcoal chimney starter and when you're done you can just pop it in the "snuff out" bag and it keeps the whole kit self-contained. on more than one occasion i've pulled that thing out to friends' smirks and mild derision only to hear "dude, that's cool!" 15 minutes later. ha! :flame:
 
Fire pit

If you ever need a non packable pit...Using a stainless steel tub from one of the front load washers works great. Not portable but easy to move and dump. The heat distributes evenly if your sitting around he tub. I use a round bbq grill from Home Depot on top and have a folding 3 legged stand for it. My tub is steel but my brother-in law found the stainless tub for his.

I showed the pot on top of the fire ring, but obviously it would slide from the bottom side as well for storage. The fire ring has a crimped section that allows the pot to be stacked over the fire about 3/4 inch from the top of the ring.

Size would be about 10 inches across, about 8 inches tall.

Anyone any ideas if someone sells something like this?

I believe both Expedition Portal and Engadget did reviews on one of these. From what I recall both came back with a verdict of great idea, but not worth the weight for the very small amount of power you get out of it. Pretty cool concept though.

This is the closest to what I'm looking for so far, but while it collapses, it does not store a pot, so that adds extra bulk again.

All the other ideas, while appreciated, are way to big/heavy to carry in a backpack.

I may simply pick up one of these sets and take a cutting wheel to the biggest pot.

Found some other cool options:

Solo Stove: 4.25*3.8*5.7 and 9oz. May need to seriously look at this one.

ah, backpack! sorry, didn't catch that requirement. i assumed this was going in the rig, obviously. it would be a special brand of stupid to stuff that Son of Hibachi into a backpack! my bad! :loco:

Well.. it WILL be in the 4Runner... just as part of my go-bag gear. Hence the wood burning requirement, because I don't want to have to rely on store-bought fuel.

I have butane stove at the moment and will be adding a Coleman dual fuel burner for regular camping/home based emergency cooking. (neither lives, or will live, in the 4Runner though)

Looks like that might be the winner. Just need to find a pot set to go with it that will store it.

Nah.. I like matching TRD's with Cooper ATP's to go completely off course (or is it off road) with this thread!
