As I mentioned, its going into my Go-Bag. Plenty of other options around for normal camping. Got my Euro butane burner for normal backpacking and will be adding a Coleman Dual Fuel for campsite camping and bug-in and vehicle based bug-out scenarios.
The Solo will be the last resort, snared a rabbit/squirrel/fish, or other small game once the Mountain House runs out. Should also be fun to cook on with the Boyscout grand-kids.
Cooking volume is small as it would be just me and the mrs. If you didn't prepare you won't be part of my bug-out party :eyebrows:
Hence the focus on biomass burners. If it works with other fuel types, that's nice, but the main selection criteria.
Your point about availability of biomass is well taken, but since I don't live in the desert; I'm not too concerned about that :laser:
The Dakota Hole was a great reminder. thanks for bringing that up!
Okki
yeah solo stove it is then, the old swiss army ones can be had for cheap and are complete unit...can be tough to find
Amazon.com: Swiss Army Volcano Stove (3 Piece Set): Everything Else
personally if i envisioned using this thing regularly i would go with the volcano stove other wise get the swiss army solo with a penny alchy stove and call it good....also i'd try making a penny stove before buy, sure they are cheap but a couple of beer cans and some alum duct tape is cheaper..i don;t drink beer, so when camping i sit back with my whiskey and make survival things from their left over beer cans for fun while shooting the breeze...lots of stuff from beer cans....haha...i digress, stupid story , not really on topic...
looks like your doing alright in your search, i just saw your cad model and was thinking hey, that's a volcano stove, simpsons did it...haha
really in my trucks so-called-bob (i don't believe in b-o-b's, i believe in being prepared to much zombie talk for me, the other way round...) all of my systems are layered, meaning i have multiple knives, cooking devices and the rest , in teh truck for cooking i keep the pocket rocket, home made solo stove/penny stove and a the omni-fuel, the penny stove/solo stove and omni fuel can all share the same liquid fuels or burn bio-mass, the pocket rocket only works on those cartridges but is the smallest and most portable for hiking, i use the pocket rocket for basically anything less than 72 hours or so as i found for the most part you can get about 3~4 days worth of meals out of a canister (cooking for 2 eating dehydrated) which is fine, for short excursions, farther than that i typically opt for the omi fuel , if i'm going for over a week or two though i got with teh solo stove/biomass/dakota hole type thing....i pay my taxes, i pay for park permits, and pay for all my licenses to be outside.... but i also don't believe in regulations of the land, so often find my self stealth camping and paying hide and seek games with ranger if I'm out for over a week, so the daktoa fire hole as been a very good thing to have as if done right it's much better than the solo stove for keeping smoke trails hidden, the only thing better would be the rocket stove but there's no way your covering any major ground with that.
