Looking for CB radio

Blackcat: If you want to write up some direction and send them to me it would be greatly appreciated, , and michael833, I dont want a huge antenna sticking over the roof of my car, just a short and simple one

So do you just want a cb for looks? You're limiting the cb immensely by putting a tiny little antenna on. You said you want to talk to truckers, you prob won't be able to do that with a little dinky antenna unless you're driving right along side the trucker lol

Yeah, you are going to need a pretty decent antenna to get actual use for this thing, (which is why you should be getting one anyway!)


Go look at the one I have (link in my signature), its taller then the car itself! People say it looks like it has a tail. haha
But it works perfectly.
 
if you just want a little ant. get one of the removable mag or suction cup type ones that sit on the roof, other wise get a 5 foot or above, every inch over the roof line is going to help. and really you might just be better off with a smaller ant. sitting on the roof than with a 5 foot one off the back, due to things like ground plane and the body of the truck blocking RF.
 
Ok thanks, see this is why I put my questions on this forum, now Ill look into larger antennas. Anyone have any specific suggestions and maybe a name or link to one that you have bought and enjoyed? thanks!

no worries, i get what your saying just because it has to be functional doesn't mean it has to be ugly as well...the standard go to is the "tunable tip" firestiks
i'm running the 5 ft with a quick disconnect and don't really see the drawbacks in the extra foot of antenna, some complain of parking garages or what have you and even flex and weight on the mount and rest while driving, i haven't had any of these issues yet on the few dirt roads and freeway driving i've done with it yet....i do think the extra 12 inches above roof life has a distinct advantage though so i went with it, so really just grab a "tuneable tip" firestik in the 4ft or 5ft flavor and you should be good, other options would be a 1XX inch whip that you bend across the roof or a little 2 ft rubber duck on the roof to use the roof as a ground plane ant.

vast majority of people run the firestik(s) and seem to be happy with them...one thing, make sure you get the tunable tip, i screwed up and got the other one and no i'm going to have to cut the ant to get my ant. tuned properly, big headache compared to the other method....in fact i have a 5ft firestick for sale for $12 if your local...haha...i'm just going back out and buying the tunable tip instead of screwing around with this one....
 
Thanks for the advice, Im going to check amazon for the firestick tunable whips (I hate amazon but i have a $100 gift card Im going to use for the CB radio and antenna. Ok, and I found the site for the antenna mount I want.

Next question, does it flail a lot like on the freeway or stay relativly straight?

Also, whats the difference of having a spring or not?

And anyone have any recomendation for a PA system for me to buy? thanks again guys this is helping a ton

I have a $100 Amazon gift card from the holidays, my total with these items is about $89 which if perfect!

I still need an antenna mount, going to get one that attaches to rear left taillight I found online

Am I doing right? 2 days ago I knew literly nothing about CB radios and have been trying to do my research

A couple of questions:
1) Is that coax cable the right thing that attaches the antenna to the CB radio?
2) What does the antenna spring do? Attach the antenna to the mount? Or does it have another feature??
3) With this set up, is the antenna going to fly around on the highway or bumpy roads or will it stay relativly firm?

How am I doing so far for a noob? Cant wait to actually order these bad boys, thanks guys!

You're missing this: Firestik - K4A - Stud Mount PL259 Screw-On Connection CB Radios, Stryker Radios, CB Radio Antennas and Accessories - Experienced CB Technicians at WalcottCB.com you have to attach the coax cable to the antenna using this.

You'll be happy with the Outdoor Logic mount. That's what I just installed on my 4R. You'll need the stud mount to connect the cable and the antenna. The cable you are looking at will attach to the cb and antenna. The spring isn't necessary, but can keep that firestik from breaking on a trail or when pulling into a garage. I like my Wilson Flex-4 antenna with no spring. But that's just personal preference. I found a broken firestik at Windrock Trail (TN) the other day. It had broken at the stud.

Ok i got rid of the spring and got rid of the mount and got the two and one suggested by OU4X4. So am I done for now?

I still need to find a PA speaker thats somewhat loud for me to plug into the back of my CB radio, plus install everything.
 
Oh just looked through the thread mentioned bydownpour11 (THANKS!) and saw the right angle adaptor, where to I get that? thanks
