I will have a kid soon, and I was wondering if you guys know where I can buy those mirror to see the backseats. I am looking for something that would fit where I put my sunglasses in (the little drop down thing (see link bellow))

Small children require a rear facing seat, all you will see is the back of the child seat until they are big enough for front facing seating. Just use the built in rear view mirror for the first 2 years.

If I had to guess this is your first child? You will soon realize 75% of the crap the baby industry tries to make you think you need is worthless. My wife had me install a mirror in order to view our baby in the back seat. After a few days we returned it, we realized we were paying more attention looking in the mirror then paying attention to the road! My advice - skip the mirror but if it gives you and your wife a piece of mind, by all means do it.

In a collision, those mirrors, and anything other loose items become projectiles, and can seriously injure your child. And as [MENTION=97173]Americas High Five[/MENTION] said, it can be very distracting, when you should be putting your attention on the road.

I have been able to manage without one of those mirrors, or any other kid/car related junk they try to sell you just fine, while taking 3 kids to and from daycare (30miles) every day. The only thing it has prevented me from doing is telling which one if them is making those fart noises from the back seat.

Also, have your child seat installation checked by a certified tech, as 4 out of 5 child seats are installed incorrectly.

Some minivans come with the mirror you're talking about. I've seen one in a dodge caravan, I think they call it an observation mirror.

Don't get one

I have a 1 month old in my 4Runner and I made a point not to install a mirror.

1. Even if you were to notice something while driving, what are you gonna do? You can't reach back there.
2. The risk of causing an accident by always being distracted at looking in that mirror is greater than the chances your baby will need immediate attention while driving.

I get the sense you were asking for a source for the part and not opinions on whether you really need it... but apparently that's just me.

There was a thread on this sometime long ago where it was referred to as a "conversation mirror." Apparently some other models have them. You may be able to compare for a part swap or you may have to create something yourself to fit in the 4runner.

If I could add my two cents in - Make sure your kids are properly buckled into your properly installed car seat.

The three biggest mistakes regarding child restraints are: (From Childrens Hospital at Vanderbilt)

1. Not putting the seat in tightly enough
2. Not tightening the straps snugly across the child
3. Not tightly securing the harness-retainer clip -- which should be at armpit level across the child's chest

I see way too many facebook posts where kids are improperly secured in their seats and it scares me since you never know when their could be an accident.

The GX 460 comes with the conversation mirror and might work as a direct add on to the 4R. I use mine all the time to keep an eye on my three forward facing little ones.

Just treat your child like my parents treated me and my two brothers:
1. I was oldest so I had to hold my baby brother - no car seats, no seat belts, no mirrors, no nothing.
2. When we got a bit older we would horseplay in the back seat and crawl into the back of the station wagon - at 70 mph. No seat belts, no car seats, no nothing.
3. Whenever we got too loud Dad would just turn around and knock the sh!t out of us. No car seat, no seat belt, no nothing.

Lol I survived but I would not recommend our method of travel. As it is your first you are allowed to be overprotective. When #2 comes you will change dramatically as you realize things!

Oh, we had a pickup truck when I was 10 and my brothers were like six and three. Yep, we all rode in the back and had a fine time!

1E's right again. The first one is the practice kid. By the time the 2nd child comes around, you'll know what to worry about and what not to worry about.
