Looking to get a remote start

Ive got a 99 limited 4X4 with 231K on the clock, im moving to arizona next week and would love a remote start so I can leave the AC on and have it blast before I get in, any ideas on brands or Ive heard its bad to have the AC on when the car starts (I have the limited so its the automatic climate control)

i recommend compustar remote starter all the way! i have a compustar alarm/starter and they are awesome! easy to install and easy to diagnose and very realiable. since your car is 99, you do need a bypass module for it (its a factory immobilizer in there you gotta bypass). just go to idatalink.com and put in the car and then you can use either the blade-al or blade-tb. the tb is cheaper but the al may have more programable features. in my opinion this is the way to go. I have installed these before and highly recommend it! :thumb3:
 
Clifford all the way! I've had my Clifford Matrix RSX 3.5 2 way security/remote start for roughly 6 yrs. and not one problem.
 
Another vote for Viper

I couldn't be happier with mine. Works from really far away, sweet remote that tells you everything
 
+1 for Viper. I have the remote start and it has great distance. The only downfall is a broken remote, prices range anywhere between $100 - $170 for a replacement.
 
I just installed an Avital system in my 4Runner, and I'm happy with it so far.

One thing that needs clarification is the fact that almost every brand mentioned so far is designed, manufactured, and sold by the same company: Directed Electronics (DEI).

DEI product lines basically parallel each other, so if you're looking at say Python vs. Viper, there will be a model from Python that is roughly equivalent to another model from Viper, and another from Clifford, and another from Avital, and so on.

All the product lines use the same sensors (shock, tilt, audio, etc) and sirens, and equivalent products between product lines use almost identical control units (the brain of the system). The only major differences between the various product lines are the name, and the look/design of the remotes and antennas, which are the only parts that are visible to the end user.

DEI brands include: Viper, AutoStart, Clifford, AstroStart, AutoMate, Python, Avital, XpressKit, Valet, etc.

Wow are they that expensive? Mine is getting a little beat up, was going to price out a replacement. I might just stick with my scratched up one

Exactly.
I've been out of the game for a while now though, I didn't know DEI bought Clifford. Clifford used to have three levels of brands. Entry level was Prime, next was Avital then Clifford. And yes, parts from all of them (including the actual module) were usually completely interchangeable.

I put a Compustar 2 way alarm/remote start in my truck 9 years ago. Never had a problem. The remote range is ridiculous. I've had it work up to 8 blocks away.
 
I need one of these for the cold mornings and I like the AC idea - getting into a sweltering vehicle is awful!

What's the installation like on these? Can someone share a diy link?
 
I just got a new key fob remote for my Viper autostart/alarm for $35 from my local car audio guy.....don't know what you're buying for $100+

Nothing fancy, just plain works.
Lock, unlock the doors, leave it running without the keys and will start the car from 300-400 yards away.
For $30 you cant beat it.
They seem to be very reliable also, most reviews of it are 5 star.

+1 for Valet, has 1/4 mile start range, works awesome!
 
A remote start system is one of the few things I have for christmas ideas. But I want to make sure I know everything before I put it on the list. I've looked at multiple remote starts as I already have a keyless entry. Therefore, that's all I want. It's clear I will have to use some type of module to make it work in my '99. However, does this bypass the factory keyless entry/alarm? Would it be worthwhile to gut the current alarm and keyless entry to have a complete all-in-one system or doable to just stick with my factory option and a one button remote start? I'd like to keep the option for rolling down my back window with a button. Do any of the remote starts have programmable features like upon start it turns on heat or air conditioner?
 
It just depends on the time of year. In the winter I put the heat on in the winter time and the air on in the summer. Simple as that.

When I was looking at mine, I was wondering whether I'd need an extra security bypass. I did not for a '98, but since you have a 99+, you will need one I believe...it's only $30 or so extra. I know with the starter I got, I can also by an adapter that can allow me to program extra things like rolling down the back window and stuff like heat and air controls. It was another $30 or so.
