Looking to install an a subwoofer and need advice on an amp.

Hey guys,

I have an old JL 12" thats just sitting in the garage and I want to install it in the 3rd gen 99' using the factory HU. I was wondering what I need to install it and what amp is good enough to power it. I dont want it to cause a tsunami or anything like that but just enough to hear the music running down the street with some umph! I also, is there a way that I can boost the factory door speakers to keep up with the installed sub? I heard something about a Hi/Low Converter or an amp with a line level input will be needed. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

why spend all that time to get bass, when u should upgrade everything, the speakers in the doors is 12 years old now. just save up. new headunit will help the door speakers a lil, 4 or 5 channel amp will help it too, but get new speakers also. look at the model of that jl sub u have, and tell me whats the ohm, and if its dvc or svc, depending on that sub, a 300w amp is fine.

There are certain amplifiers that allow "hi level input" basically speaker wires to run as input into the amp.

In my opinion this is a bad idea. The factor head unit sucks and you can buy a used aftermarket Alpine or Kenwood Excelon for $99 on EBAY then pair it with a set of $99 front (only) speakers for some really decent sound.

Sounds good brian, I will look around and see what I can find. Rice, there are no marks on the back of the sub that indicates the size and specs of the unit. it just says jl audio

check around the magnet, and woofer, i still have a jl audio 8w1 from 96 and it was printed on the magnet edge, ull find it, or u can post some good pics of the sub.
