Lotus CV Axles are here!

I watched these axles in action again this weekend. Going up 4' steps, endless slick rock climbs, loose rock, Four days of serious rock crawling without an issue. Not to mention the highway miles to and from the trails.

Does that cover the factory Toyota inner joint and bar, or just the HD outer joint?
Good question. It's for the inner joint and bars as well.

nice! yeah I think most broken cages will come apart pretty well. Are your ball bearings ok? I would want new bearings If I could buy them. For one I think I've lost a few...
You'd need to get all new bearings anyway. The bearings in the new race and cage are larger.

With these stronger axles, would it be safe to assume that those of us running the diff drop can get rid of this?
No, I wouldn't say it's a good reason to remove the diff drop. Remember, there's still the angles on the inner joint, and boots to keep in mind.

Looks more like a driveshaft breaker than a cv axle breaker right there.. I love it and wish I could have been there to follow!

I am going to call you out on this one.

Putting in bigger bearings into a raceway is nearly impossible. Especially for a person who offering only one model of half shafts.

The Tulip is harden steel and to cut and polish new surfaces would take specialized cutting equipment and heat treating ovens to put the hardness back into the surface.

The bearing surface is hardened for wear (only a mm or so) and the rest of the tulip annealed and treated for strength.

I have seen the manufacturer slice a tulip down the middle and QA the edges and the center for the correct specs.

Makes me wonder...

I can understand why you would think that but in the future please take a few minutes to read a little more before making such a statement. You would have noticed that there is a new race with the cage. The new race was necessary because of the thicker walls in the cage.

There is a new cage AND race. That's why there are also new bearings and a different housing.

I'm actually surprised that there are a few people that seem to have such doubts. This is an axle I helped develop because I wanted one to satisfy my own rock crawling appetite. We've spent a lot of time and money testing them so that they could be shared with a reasonable amount of confidence. I guess it's natural to have doubts since this isn't an easy part to develop. The tooling alone is an amazing feat.

theoretically, could you run one of the lotus cv axles on one side and a stock one on the other side? Cause if i buy them id have to buy one at a time also i keep breaking the drive axle side so maybe just switch a lotus one in the driver side?

I think, I have this figured out. From what i measured from the parts I have laying around. This axle that has been developed is basically a tundra outboard CV joint re-installed onto a 4runner shaft and inner tripod.

Thus the reason for it not being offered on the Manual hub front ends.

Much stronger components within the Toyota axles. The axles take Toyota OEM axle housings and upgrade the components inside the outer joint with a newly engineered race and cage. In addition to the added material thickness we also upgraded to chromoly steel. The new cage and race components are over 6 times stronger than a stock outer joint.

I am fine with making a better product but taking someone else's design and calling it your own is a bit disconcerting.

That would be like me saying that I engineered a new power plant for the 4runner . I take Toyota OEM parts and upgrade the components inside with newly engineered isolators and the stock 4runner ECU is re-engineered with faster processing speeds. The new power plant is 50% more powerful then the stock motor. The tooling alone is an amazing feat.

So, It is great that they have this new product and that it is superior to the stock one but wording it they way that they did is wrong, and then profit from it.
:flamewar:
There again, I don't have dog in this fight because I can't use this axle.

Yep, that's a good idea. A wheeler here in Colorado just did the same thing and bought one axle for now.

Would this axle give any more droop than a stock axle for those of us with mid travel setup?
No, it doesn't offer any more angle, the max angle on the CV is the same as a stock joint. It would have been nice to increase the angle on the outer but unless the inner was also changed it wouldn't have done much good.

All you are doing is speculating that someone who is trying to develop new products for the 3rd gen is somehow trying to rip people off.

What about people who take the TRD Tundra/LC/Bilstein lift and sell it as a complete kit? Are they ripping people off? Who cares? Good for them for thinking of it before anyone else.

If you don't have a dog in the fight...stop fighting.

If that is in fact what they are doing there is a local shot that I had some built a while back and he said some about upgrading them to the Tundra Joints and stuff he said he had been doing it for years for the 3rd Gen I will have hit him up I think is was only like 80 bucks for a rebuild and think he was charging 150 for the upgrades.

Could end up being a good idea and a way to get some better strength without having to go to something as costly. After you test fit them, how about calculating the increase in strength, max joint angle, and pricing? Let us know. It could be a better solution.

We just sold another axle, this one went to Canada. He seemed like real nice guy. I'm surprised how much stuff we ship up north. Between the long shipping distance and fees for stuff to cross the border it seems unfair to have to pay such high additional costs. I'm sure there are lots of benefits to living in Canada. I'd love to go wheeling up there and check out the vast space with so many lesser traveled trails.

"IF" this is true, I agree pretty sad

Whoah there turbo, these are not Tundra parts. If that was the case there wouldn't have been any reason for me to fork out the cash to have some of the parts machined up. You might have missed the post but steezemcqueen was sharp enough to also know that the Tundra parts are not chomoly. A well informed and intelligent mind would have known that before making wild suggestions with an accusatory tone.

There's nothing wrong with the wording in the product description. It's accurate and forthcoming. It's quite clear in the very first post that we combined parts to make the new axle. We brought that to everyone's attention from the get go in order to be transparent. How do you think Singtoe got the idea to conjecture in the first place?

Had someone had enough brains to do something better or cheaper then they would have done it. Maybe we'll be lucky and someone smart, intelligent, and with the means to risk some money like Singtoe or yourself will produce such a thing? I have no problem buying a less expensive and superior product from someone else.

If you wish to perpetuate the drama do so by creating something better. Anyone can badmouth or start rumors. Make something so good and so cheap that it makes the LD axles look pathetic. That's doing something worth while. Quoting something that isn't true is really what's sad. It means either you knew that it wasn't true and wanted to create problems or that you didn't know enough to be able to ascertain the truth for yourself.

Have you stopped to think about what Singtoe is suggesting?

When a company like Toyota specs out design parameters and then pays other companies to engineer it, manufacture it, and then sell it under the Toyota name, is what they are doing is wrong? If you think that is wrong then you are in for a major disappointment when you learn more about how companies of the world work. Were you upset when you bought the computer you used to type up your post, your phone, your 4runner, your microwave...?

I'm not sure why Singtoe is so sore. I'm guessing that he's upset that it isn't cheap or free? That's OK. This isn't a mandatory item. For those that find value in it they will buy it for those that don't or can't buy it then they won't. If someone can't afford it now and they really want a LD axle then they will find a way to save or make the money. It's simple, buy it if you want, or don't.

Your opinions are welcome but your inaccurate suggestions by association are not. Post up something that contributes to the better of all keep the noise level down and save it for a rant in private.

Believe you me. I am not sore about a damn thing - except for a trd super charger that i was bidding on that ended up on here for twice the ebay price.

I am for the average everyday Joe. Who wants to beef up and make bullet proof their ride in a cost effective way. That's what forums are for.:surfer:

I have seen cv joints made - I know the machinery and treatment processes involved with making cv joints. I am calling out who ever is making these axles out only because it would be cost prohibitive to make just one axle for one application. If I remember right, it takes a 2500 ton press to squish out a tulip (CV Joint) and not many people have access to one of those.

Toyota putting up a bid for someone to make a part to call their own is fine. Toyota calls Dana to make their frames. They give them the specs and Dana produces the frame and stamps toyota on it. So what.

It is free enterprise and we can sell what we want for what ever price we can get. More power to you.

If you want to stop the skepticism, all you have to do is document the mojo that makes these axles worth $1000.

Just for the record, I was asked to stop bickering so I have not discussed this topic anymore but my name was brought up so am defending it. I wouldn't want to get kicked off any more forums. :crybaby:

ban him ban him ban him...... lol jk singtoe, i would hope that T4R is open minded enough to allow general debate and or banter as well as expressing ones opinions in a polite and professional manor, such as you have done.

with that being said, i think both sides have very valid points. but this is, or at least was the land of opportunity and if i remember correctly capitalism is one of the things that makes that possible. and being so the man with the well sets the price for the water... now if we dont like his price, we are all welcome to dig our own... in this case there are several wells but one man has found a way to pump more water faster and his water is more pure. so if you want the cleaner water faster then you have to pay the price, other wise you can go scoop out your own over there for less.

-i hope that made sense to everyone

That did make sense brother

I'd hate to see someone get banned for arguing with a vendors product...reminds me of YotaTech and the whole waskily wabbit ordeal
