Lug nut torque...what value do YOU use?

While rotating my tires today, I stumbled upon an interesting issue in the FSM.

One section of the FSM calls for a torque value of: 97 ft-lbf

Another section of the FSM calls for a torque value of: 83 ft-lbf

And finally the owner's manual calls for a torque value of: 81 ft-lbf

To the lay person like me, it seems like ~97 ft-lbf might be a bit overkill since the studs don't really look any thicker than passenger car studs? I recall most of my hondas and toyotas with similar diameter studs being ~80ish ft-lbf...

Personally I've always torqued my lug nuts to ~84 ft-lbf on the 4runner and called it good, but I'm curious about how tight you guys like to twist yo nuts?

85 ft-lbs cause it's easy to set on my torque wrench and it's close enough.
 
This is an unfortunate example of the contradictory statements Toyota (other manufacturers as well for that matter) that can get shops and owners in some trouble. Its a well known fact that Toyota says WS Fluid is "LifeTime" but much of their literature is "It is, but it isn't" when you really look at it.

All your pictures look to be from TIS I would assume and that's even more of a shame because they should be able to update and correct all their service information much easier.

I would use 85ft.lbs as that's probably the best torque. Though in school years back we had a torque chart for vehicles and many trucks were in the 90-100 range vs. passenger cars and minivans that had between 80-90.
 
If your paying enough attention to need a torque wrench your doing fine with anything 80-90.

Few things I've learned on torque wrenches from working at some shops, parts stores, and dealers. 1) you need a good one (craftsman, snap on, Cromwell, etc), 2) it needs to be calibrated often, 3) needs to be released (turned to zero) after use.

My owner's manual shows 81. I checked after my last two free rotations from the dealer to find a few too loose and a few very tight.

On the tight ones, maybe the tire monkey just turned until it squeeked?

I'll do my own rotations in the future.
 
I just got my wife to show me how tight she could break loose since she's the one that has to change the spare. That's as tight as I go. The wheels havent fallen off yet so I guess that works.

Torque to proper spec and get her a Auto club membership.
 
yall are going to think i'm crazy but I turn mine to 120ft/lb.. on every vehicle. I've had tires come off going down the road, really don't want it to happen again. If they're weak enough to break from my torque they'll snap when i go to remove them then its time for a new stud.
