Lurch when Shifting from Park to Drive

Hello All,

I've been trying to figure out what it is. When I shift from park to drive or drive to reverse or any other combination, my truck lurches forward. I thought doing the tundra brake upgrade would solve this issue, but it didn't. What do you think it could be? I have 204,000 miles. Maybe a worn out transmission mount? It's kind of annoying, I've had 3 other 4runners that never did that. I expect a little bit, because of the torque, but not this much. I did a search and didn't find much on it. Any help is appreciated.

Interested to see what you find out. I've been having a similar issue but doesn't feel as much like a lurch as it does something in the drive train engaging. I plan on having the u-joints and such checked out but I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for other insight.

Truck looks good!

Thanks. It's been a serious work in progress. I should've bought something else, but I've pretty much replaced the entire front steering and shock components. It's still scary driving it. I have the Lower Control Arm bushings left, hope that fixes the steering issues.... but that is not what this post is about.

I'm gonna stay tuned for the answer also. Mine has been doing this pretty bad lately. From park to reverse leaving the garage is rough.

Did you mess with the throttle cable tensioner?

I did mess with this when I first got it. Why would this effect it? Also, I do have a soft start... contrary to most hard starts. It always starts, but kinda bubbles when it does.

If you tighten it slightly too much the car will creep forward/back faster when you put in D or R with the foot off pedal. And it's hard to tell when it's too just tight from feeling the slack in the engine compartment, on mine anyway.

If you are suspecting the trans mount, you can check it with somebody's help. Have someone you trust not to run you over get in the driver's seat while you're under the rig. Have them shift from Park to Drive and Drive to Reverse while you're looking at the trans mount. The trans mount is made of rubber pieces sandwiched between two metal plates. The rubber is attached to the metal by some type of process and over time the rubber can become separated from the metal causing excessive movement. This excessive movement could be what's causing the lurching feeling.

Excellent. Thanks for this tidbit. I've run into the problem with Trans mounts being an issue in some of my other 4runners. I'll check this out this weekend.

Thanks, I can check this out tonight and see if adjusting it helps.

i know this is a long shot but did you put a locker in the rear? after i put my lunchbox locker in it jerks when putting it into reverse or drive. it shifts the same otherwise. i attribute it to the spider gears arent as finely meshed with the locker. sometimes when i put it into reverse it will chirp the tires a lil bit lol

Nope, I don't have a locker. I'm still guessing transmission mount, but I haven't had a chance to look at it.

Hey NewVillains did you figure out what was causing your issue? I have the same problem and am looking to start trouble shooting it this weekend.

Thanks
