After shopping all of the Truckvault like products out there, I finally decided to go wood and do my own. I enlisted the services of someone with better tools and much greater skill than I. You can see the results below.

There is about a $200 investment in materials: 1/2 inch Birch 7 ply for most, 3/4 inch ply for drawer bottom and top of box, hardwood face, 150 lb drawer glides, laquer finish, latch and hardware.

I would normally overbuild the capacity, but going above the 150 lb rating on the drawer glides was a significant price increase. I'm very happy with the results. I will most likely carpet the top before I am done.

For my use, a lock is not necessary. The top is 3/4 plywood, and the supporting box has angle braces on the corners. Though it was not tested, I'm confident I could jump rope on top of it, and assure you it will support any normal use. If I ever decide to jump rope on top of it, I will post a video!

I secured it with a couple U-bolts and turnbuckle cable-tensioners to the D rings in the back. I considered doing the same to the D rings in the front but figured if the back wasn't enough, I probably had bigger problems.

I really didn't want to mess with 2 drawers as it really eats away at your cargo realestate. What I would probably consider if weight bearing was a concern: Shortening the drawer and putting a section in the back of the box that would be accessed through the top (most easily from the back seat). Items that you don't need often could be placed there and you would reduce the span of the top. This modification could also be made without the extra expense of a second set of drawer glides.

What are the boxes external dimensions, and the drawers internal dimensions?

I built my box at 43" wide, 37" deep, and 8.5" tall. It sits on a custom metal frame over the stock trail tailgate. So my stock tailgate is still usable.

I built it as tight as possible to maximize drawer space. I'll have to double check, but I recall my drawer internal dimensions are 38" wide, 34.75" deep and the side height ended up at 5.75" total internal clearance. Its pretty nice still having the tailgate, but I really, really would like to have just a couple more inches of clearance inside the drawer. It can fit everything I want to put into it except my backpack.

Outside: 30.5" deep / 41" wide / 11" tall. It sits completely on the carpet but pretty tight to the plastic and rises just above the plastic fender well trim.

Inside: 28" deep / 38" wide / 9.25" tall

I still have not found any black carpet to cover the top, but convinced more than ever that it is needed. Home Depot has some nice charcoal stuff, but I haven't given up the search for black.
