Magnuson Supercharger for 2010-Present & 2010-2014 FJ

yeah the pricing for the beta testers is laughable. a 50% discount would be appropriate given the risks the customer is having to take.

last time i beta tested a super charger. i got 50% off and free install. Different truck and platform..

when someone beta tests something for you.. you need to give it to them for close to cost. end of story.

Worst beta test incentives ever.

Retail is $5500? $500 off your estimated price. Not sure why everyone is complaining about the price. Tundra is a $7k and Tacoma is $5k, this is a completely new kit so I would say it's priced fair?

You answered your own question.

I tested a prototype single weight flywheel for a clutch company when I ordered their clutch kit. The cost of the flywheel to me was $0. I'm not suggesting that the supercharger be free, but not having to pay for the flywheel saved me 25-30% over what I would have paid for the full kit, had I not been a beta tester.

I have used other peoples cars as test units before either at a very low cost or for free depending on what i was trying out and the cost to me, because i knew if they were satisfied they would tell other people who would then pay me to do the same.
Now i do have to say that i personally like to apply the old car dealer addage to most things i do.
"I would rather sell 20 cars and make $100 per car, than to sell 1 car and make a $1000."

Do you know once its officially released will everyone need to send their ECU to get programed or is that needed just for the pilot program?

I am awaiting the answer on this but from knowledge no. The reason for people sending in their ECU is because Toyota has used x amount of softwares for the 5th Gen ECU so they want to insure they get them all and that I works properly.

Pricing

Good morning,

I understand a lot of you are upset and disappointed in the pricing that was sent. I personally can't answer to reasoning or thought process behind it because the truth is I don't know it. I don't work for Magnuson. I simply am here to relay information. I found out when the emails were sent out. All I can I say is that it is very expensive for a company to create and R&D a supercharger for a new platform. With the Tacoma pricing at 5k and the Tundra at 7k this seems to be a middle ground for retail cost. As for the Pilot cost I can't answer that at this moment. It's your choice to apply if it's reasonable in your eyes. If it's not then I hope in future it works out or you're able to spend it on another great modification. I will continue relaying info and updates for those that want to look back at this thread.

Some have asked what the deal is with shipping their ECU. The reason is because they need to scan the software to insure that the multiple different softwares in the 5th Gen are accounted for and work properly. As for those worried about shipping, I would first see how far out Magnuson pushes this program. Could stay in CA, may go up the coast, maybe to the east coast we don't know. But I agree I'd be hesitant in sending my ECU say to FL.

I try and jump on this as much as possible. Half the time I do it's because I get an email saying someone said something. I'm in the process of moving so I will jump on this during my downtime to answer questions.

I'm sure they'll have people apply but man, what cheapskates. Especially depending on what responsibility they take in the event of an engine failure. Signing a pilot program waiver to me sounds like your SOL if something goes wrong. Like everyone has said so far, that's a lot of risk for $500 bucks.

I don't think people are complaining about the $5500.00 price tag it's the 9% discount that their giving with the R&D isn't finished. You're asking people to test these units on thier vehicles.

If they want $5500 bucks for the unit I'll be the first one online but if you want me to spend 5k on something that's not 100% you are out of your mind.

THESS Thanks for doing what you have by letting us know this and keeping us informed. I dont believe anyone is upset with you or anything. But like most of the people here have stated Magnusson is a little nuts on a 9%discount to be a crash test dummie. If i had lots of spare money that didnt go to everything else in life i would pony up the 5500 after bugs are worked out. As a dummie I wouldnt pay much over 1/2 price to just try to see if it works.

I don't think I can clarify it anymore. I'm not asking anyone to do anything, I do not work for Magnuson. Just thought it would be of help to people to hear what's going on. Nor am I trying to change people's minds. If an individual wants to buy one then they will buy one. If it's too expensive then it's too expensive. I can't change what the pilot test price is but what I can do is relay people's frustrations but that's as far as I can go. Simply delivering messages.

THESS Here's what I'm wondering: Please don't be offended, but I'm wondering why there is a middleman (you) acting as go-between. You still have to go to Mag for answers, which means they still have to answer them, and then you have to provide the interface.

Seems cumbersome, when (IMO) a Mag person should be here, vs a non-Mag person. Makes it look like they're filtering end user input.

I mean, this is a big 4R Forum, predominantly populated by enthusiasts who have GOT to be a large target audience.

THEY need to be reading, participating, and responding, not a spokesperson.

i'm not sure how to feel..........

i'm shocked that there is only a $500 discount for beta testing. i sort of feel like they anticipate the demand being high enough that people will pay no matter what. i'n not going to apply to use my vehicle to help when essentially there is no discount, when factoring in the likely added expenses of being one of the first to 'learn' how to install and troubleshoot.

with that being said, i'm certainly looking forward to the release of the kit at $5500???!!! thats $1500 cheaper than i had anticipated!!!!! at $5500 i'll be ready to order when the kit is ironed out

No offense taken and I hear what you are saying. I brought it up and they just are extremely busy. Just thought it would help them and help some people on here. 98% of the time I get an answer right away. There is no filtering anything I get I relay and I'm not being fed filtered info. Magnuson is very straight to the point. It's said to be what it is. Everything y'all say they see. I hear what you are saying and will let them know. I don't think you are the only one.

If a company is too busy to communicate with their targeted consumer base, how will that translate to customer service if/when there's an issue with the product?

(rhetorical question)

Very confused on this process. Signed up a long time ago for the newsletter. Got confirmation...

Tired to follow the link provided in this thread to sign up again, said email was already registered.... I've received no additional emails.... What gives?

Never mind. It was in my junk mail folder....

BTW, so much whining and group think on here.. 5th gen owners are a unique bunch for sure.

I'm not a Magnuson spokesperson...by any stretch... but from past experience with their stuff... This is not a beta program. It is a verification program.. Still.. it is for problem solver types.. not for someone looking to save money as there could be some inconvenience. If you don't want to be an early adopter... and don't have the skills of flexibility... just don't be one. Simple as that. It's not for everyone, just like this kit is not for everyone.

I'm not saying they're too busy for their targeted base. All I'm saying is we aren't the only platform or release. Many different makes models etc. take it how you would like. But sometimes there isn't enough time in the day or man power to be readily available on every platform out there.

Amen.

If you don't like the pilot program price then move along. I am doubtful that the full priced kit will be less than $6000 but we shall see. And to the folks complaining about having to pay for install, you have to do that either way if you don't have the mechanical aptitude to install it yourself.

I would be on board but my 4Runner is my daily and I'm not gonna buy another one just so I can test out a supercharger and get a discount. I'll wait until the production kit comes to market.

Good point. From the beginning Travis has called it "Pilot". When you think about it, the "Beta" has been running on their own 5th Gen for quite some time..... successfully, it seems.

From the get go this is a pilot program to confirm what was confirmed on their beta but by vehicles varying in year, weight, gearing etc. their 2017 test vehicle has been nothing but successful from the drive up to FJ and back then down to Some southern states and back to California. Also been being driven everyday. The system works and has been working flawlessly on theirs. Now comes down to the community getting their hands on it and testing it in their vehicles and how they drive. Yes there is a risk but it's a system that works. Beta is complete that's why they are being pushed. You will have full support from Magnuson with any issues if y'all choose that route to go and end up getting chosen.
