other than the oil change, is there any other reason this light would come on?

it started flashing at start-up a couple days ago. the oil was changed a few months ago, and the light reset then.

im trying to figure out why it would be coming on early.

It flashes a bit after startup when you are nearing 5000 miles since the last reset, then stays solid once you hit 5000.

thanks.
yes, im aware that is how it works. im curious if there is any other reason it might come on.

I changed the oil in august, unfortunately, I didn't write down the mileage, but based on the entire last years driving, I should have gone less than 2,000 miles so far. thus the question of why the light is on early.
BlackWorksInc any ideas?

Any chance you forgot to reset it? It does sound like it thinks it's time for an oil change. I don't think there is much else that could trigger it?

i definitely reset it. it just started flashing a couple days ago. theres no way ive driven 4500 miles yet.

I will have to actually write the mileage down this time. I didn't do it this last time "because light". but, im not sure I can trust it now.

do you know if it has an "oil condition" sensor? it has been very wet and cool here, and I do a LOT of short drives. could it be detecting excess moisture, and flagging it for a change?

I did pull the oil fill cap yesterday, and it was completely full of that milky crap you get from condensation, and short drives. I will start taking the freeway home for the next couple weeks, see if that makes a difference.

so the light finally lit up solid, I waited a week or so then changed the oil. i reset the light, and this time I wrote down the miles.

im still not convinced that was 5,000. we shall see what happens next time.

BlackWorksInc,

The MAIN'T light on my '06 Sport never came on every 5k as it's supposed to. I know the light is there because it lights up along with other dashboard lights when the key is in ON position.

Would it be possible that the previous owner had this "oil-change reminder" feature disabled at a Toyota service dept.?

my boss has a 13 rav4. her maint light came on recently, she took it in to the dealer, they told her it was on for the tire rotations.
that it comes on for 2 things, oil changes every 10,000 miles, and tire rotations every 5,000.

any idea if our 4runners did something similar?

You guys are way over thinking the light. It is only a mileage driven feature that turns on solid every 10k miles. You must have not cleared it all the way when you changed the oil.

you're suggesting I only cleared it part way? lol.
so it was off for 3800 ish miles, instead of the full 5k.....

No not at all. I'm suggesting that you held reset thinking you reset it and didn't. Either way...Sounds like you know way more about cars than I do anyway. Check the "oil condition sensor" after you top off your headlight fluid...

ok, and if I didn't reset it, why was the light off for 3K+ miles?

I've been changing my own oil lately. How DO I reset that maint light? 03 limited
