Maint Reqd Light on for Bald Tires?

My wife drives our 2011 4Runner. Recently the Maint light came on, so I told her take it to the dealership. What they told her has my BS meter going off. They told her the Maint light was on because her tires were bald and needed to be replaced.

I checked her tires, sure they are getting close, but are not bald at all. How would the car even know to turn the maint light on for this?

So basically, after I told her NOT to buy anything until I could see the tires, they did nothing and sent her on her way. The light is still on. Is my BS meter spot on?

If this isn't a joke: I would take it back to the dealership myself and ask them just how this system works. After that, I would be making phone calls to the dealership principal and Toyota of America. That is just wrong to treat customers that way. And needless to say, never take it back there again.

The maintenance light comes on at a set mileage. now I'm not 100% familiar with the 4runner system, but on the last Lexus I played with, I believe it had about 15 different maintenance items in the nav screen. All had to be reset with both time and mileage parameters.

While it's not a WEAR SENSOR telling you the tires are BALD as they so put it, it does give you an idea that she's about due for tires. They should have presented the solution in a much better way.

In the event it's just a "dumb" maintenance light where all you do is set a specific mileage, then they're fishing for repairs and that makes me question their integrity.

It's a dumb maintenance light meant to remind you to change your oil and the dealership is fishing for repairs.

Totally blows, but a lot of service techs and mechanics see woman as easy targets and will them her that anything and everything is wrong with their vehicle. Please do report this dealer to corporate.

Yeah it is very unfortunate. The correct thing to have done would have been to say "the light came on because it reached a set number of miles. We just reset it for you. We did happen to notice your tires are almost worn down completely. Something to keep in mind".

or something like that. I'm no service writer, I just sell the service writer on repairs.

My guess is your wife misunderstood. What the service tech most likely told her was that it was time for a tire rotation, maybe something about so your tires don't go bald. What mileage does your truck have, when was your last service, and what was performed?
Of course, I could be wrong.
