My dealership included the complimentary service package that has these tear away coupons and one was for an oil change at the 5k mark, well they refused to honor it saying that the oil would be changed at 10k. That day they kept my truck all day for a tire rotation. I live in an extreme climate its been 115 degrees the last week so regardless of what the dealership says i'm doing mine every 5k. Maybe its just me but i don't feel comfortable with the amount of off roading i do and this crazy hot weather to trust the oil to be good till 10k I changed the oil myself and i'm glad i did, it got me more familiar with my 4R but it was ***** to get the skid plate loose...that thing was put on with an impact gun but i got it off with no damage.
Attached are Toyota's first two scheduled maintenance obligations for the 6-cylinder 2010/2011 4Runner sold in the U.SA. and delivered with synthetic oil. I don't see any provision for purchasers to obligate Toyota to anything else. Seems to me if you want a custom maintenance program it's on your dime.

Froggy, this has been discussed to death on the earlier threads.
The PDF you're linking to is a later revision of the maintenance guide. I can post a pic of the original if you like that clearly shows an oil change is required at 5k.
My "free" service agreeement was included as part of the new car negotiations. 5 oil changes is a significant expense that I expected to be covered without a battle.
Hey Azn! I live now in Rancho Mirage off DaVall. Bought my SR5 Blizzard Pearl White in February. I'm one of those driving it "stock"..(don't tell anyone, I don't want them to kick me out of the site! :naughty
. Just have the package with the dual power seats, sunroof, chrome tip, cargo bars, etc. I've only seen 3 5th gen 4R here...another blizzard SR5 with running boards, a 2010 from Canada (4 cyl. with unpainted trim...certainly NOT a TE), and a black limited. How about you?

^Sorry not to thread jack the OP. I think I've seen you once before. I was on gerald ford heading east at the davall intersection. You were on davall heading north making a left onto gerald ford. I too am in a BP Runner with a bajarack, black konigs, and satoshi! I'm sure the next time I see you around I'll honk. LOL!
When I bought mine I was given two options, 5k oil changes with dino oil or 10k oil changes with synthetic. I would suggest asking your service department about your options.

what about the item at the bottom of the 5K mile maintance check list:
"Extensive idling and/or low speed driving
for a long distance such as police, taxi or
door-to-door delivery use:
Replace engine oil and oil filter"
I am at about 5500 miles (only 2K on the new tires),and want to bring the 4runner in.
It's primarlily my wifes daily driver, and she drives maybe 3 miles to work and back, with 5 stop lights. With the temperatures being so damn high and the A/C not up to the task of cooling so much interior space, we let it idle a lot to get cool inside (for the baby). How do I convey this to the wonderful people at the service counter, and get them to change the oil?

i have the same question/concern...i average ~5000 miles per year...if oil is only changed at 10k interval...im looking at two full years between changes...that doesn't seem good?...what are others thoughts?...this is my first vehicle with synthetic..i don't know if it is meant to last 2 years..or if Any oil will last 2 years.

So, why not just tell the dealer to change the oil and pay for it yourself? Just have them them do it at 10,000 annd 20,000 on their dime.

To my knowledge they don't make a dino 0W20 oil. The dealer said Toyota requires them to use syn if the car is specd for it. The 4Runner is.
Pay for the O/C and then make an official complaint to Toyota. See if the dealer gives a refund like mine did.
I DO remember that day! Thats about a block away from my house.
Now I know and I'll honk as well.

I figured that was you after I saw you location. Anyways hopefully you can make it up to the socal meet up were planning next month.
The recommended maintenance interval for an oil change is every 10K miles or "12 months". Even if you are averaging less than the recommended mileage, you should change your oil at least annually.
Et al: If someone (like me) prefers to have their oil changed more frequently, dealers should be happy to change it for you; just not on their dime. If they fuss, find another dealer. Dealer coupons for free maintenance are generally only recognized at scheduled (theirs, not yours) maintenance intervals. Those of us that may be slightly more 'anal retentive' with maintenance should be prepared to pony up for the extra care or perform it ourselves.

OK, so i went in for my 5K mile service today:
They did an alignment per my request, and of course, rotated the tires, checked fluids, etc.
I asked about the oil change, and told them a few times the vehicle idles a lot, but they still said, no need, the oil is good. The mechanic was good and we talked for a bit. He said he was not sold on the 10K mile oil change deal, but mine looked clean still at 5500 miles.
On another note, they managed to nick all 4 wheels ever so slightly while removing the lug nuts, which sucks. The manager was fantastic and offered to repaint them all. I told him to hold off and I would get them clean this weekend to see how bad it really is.
