Making A Change - Built JK to Trail???

Sahara does not have lockers.

Most here are comparing a trail to a rubicon... the trail is likely as or more capable stock than a sahara. Rubicon beats the trail hands down off road though.

Not the case, all JK's have the ability to have lockers (as an option). Rubi's have them standard. Hands down the best wheeling vehicle is a Jeep, in all aspects.

Not as per the website.

This is the only option for the powertrain (other than gear ratio or auto/manual)

This option features:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Feature: Mechanical limited slip differential
A mechanical limited slip differential uses a set of gears and clutches that moderates wheel spin by transmitting torque to the driving wheel with the best traction.

Mine did... ARB... point was you can have a front locker and those mods and reasonable price

I wouldnt go that far, depends on what type of wheeling you are doing.... and knowing how to wheel is far more valuable than a rear locker

:spider:

You can add F+R ARB's to an SR5 or limited, i don't see your point...
Agreed it depends on wheeling you do... but stock for stock i'd take a trail over a sahara... but i would take a rubicon over each hands down (for stock wheelin').... my buddy bought a 2012 rubicon with the better motor... i like it alot...

based on the 2013's you are correct but before the new motor came out you had the ability to option to lockers. That said, even with out lockers a Jeep will out perform a 4 runner TE, SR5, etc in terms of off road without an issue. Just think in terms of ground clearance and axles alone. Dana 44's front and rea on a rubi. D44 and D30 on everything else and a leveling kit of 1.5" you run 35" tires. That said, imagine matching the lift with what would be comprable to a Ultimate or Icon stage 2-3. I was on 3" of lift with minor trimming and ran 37" tires.

Have any of you driven the same trails with both? If so, where is the 4runner trail lacking? I have a modded 2003 Sahara, not an unlimited and have not done this. Other than wheelbase and solid axles what were the differences you saw?

My neighbor has a 2012 TE with the Ultimate lift and we have wheeled several times together. The TE is a very capable vehicle and in most cases will be more than enough, even in stock form for most "users". The area where my JK is significantly better was in articulation and ground clearance. Having the ability to unlock the front and rear sway bars and having a low cog allows you to always (well 99.9% of the time) have a tire touching the ground where as the 4runner found itself in the opposite situation.

All that a Jeep rides like a dump truck and is a money pit mechanically and the aftermarket parts are rediculously expensive. It's time for a change so TE here I come.

HAHAHAHAHAHAH tell that to all the jeepers with Dana 30 / 35's.... i'll take my IFS 4runners over those toothpicks anyday.... atleast the yota' IFS can handle 33's.....

Where do you get your information from? A D30 can more than handle 33's but in heavy wheeling would need to be sleeved and C Gusseted in orde rto handle anything larger.

The other fun thing about coming from a SA front to IFS is floating a front tire 2'-3' in the air. It's something you get used to.

Well, just spoke with Toytec via email and they recommended their Ultimate Lift which runs 5100's. I am a little concerned with this since 5100's tend to ride a little firmer than say a King or I'm sure Icon. That said can anyone chime in with their reports as to ride quality?

the penstar is not a better motor it is a crap minivan motor that has been around for ever. The only good motor Jeep put in a wrangler was the 4.0.... now you need to HEMI swap those beyotches!

Jeeps have not used that axle combination since around 2005 and even then most 4.0 engines had Dana 44s.

They need to offer a Hemi from the factory.

not true at all.... 35/30 was the most common combo in the TJ unless you upgraded the rear to a 44 and the RUbis had 44s. the JKs have 44/30 in everything except the rubi

I have owned both a 4runner and Wrangler for many years. In my opinion my 4runner lifted 3 inches is about the same as a stock Wrangler 2 door in capability in the desert. At stock height in a 4runner you will be dragging on a lot of rocks and hitting the bumpers going threw washouts, ruts etc. If you are talking about a 4 door Jk then they would be more like a 4runner I would think. The 2 door Wrangler smaller size make it very easy to manuver and see out of. The Wrangler give you a lot more confidence off road. It seems to go over things easily that makes you very nervous in a 4runner. I guess a lot of it is being afraid to damage the 4runner. In the 4runner we spend to much time trimming tree branches and moving rocks were in the Jeep we just bash threw. I gave my Jeep to my son earlier this year and bought a new Avalon to do my long trips in. My 4runner is mostly for off road and around town now. I may be joining an off road club here in the future and the 4runner will not get the job done on the harder trails. I will most likely be going to a 2013 Jk. They finally put a decent engine in the Jeeps again in 2012.

As I said the last TJs were made in 2005 or 2006 and most later Sahara TJs had dana 44 rears. I think the JKs came out in 06 or 07.

Slee Offroad is local to you and have out custom valved Radflo's now for 5th Gen 4Runners and are very comparable to Icons. Give Cristo a call............... Sleeoffroad.com - Toyota SUV Off-Road Outfitters

So, just got off the phone with Icon and I am very impressed with the time they took to properly address all of my questions. Their kits are VERY nice and if I go that way it will most likely be Stage 2 with an upgraded 2.5" rear shock and then continue to upgrade throughout time to their billet trailer & link arms and track bar. That said, I really didn't think that I would have to spend $5,000 on a complete suspension system for the 4runner. Is there THAT BIG of a difference between say the Stage 2 Icon and the Ultimate lift in terms of road handling?

Thanks harper7, I'll definitely give them a call tomorrow morning.

There is actually rumors of a diesel motor in '15. You should see what Bruiser Conversions is doing with the 4BT diesel, on 37" tires and 4.10 gearing you can have 400HP (on idle) and 650 Ft Lbs and 32 MPG hwy/25 City plus blowing a huge cloud of black smoke........Only in my dreams could I swing that!

My Sahara is modified it has front and rear arb lockers, dana44 in the rear, 2.5 OME suspension lift 1.25 inch body lift, long arm, anti-rock, SYE, on and on. so I know how capable a Jeep is. You are right an modded Sahara does not have lockers etc ... my question is simply has anyone compared apples to apples as far as same trails?

Sorry probably hijacked this thread:nerd:
