maintenance for piece of mind

Hey everybody im putting together a list of part that I want to replace when I have the money just for a little peace of mind know my truck wont fail me when I need it. Now when I say that I feel dumb because I know 3rd gen 4runner are one of the most(if not the most) reliable vehicles. But ive owned mine for about 6 months and it has 185k miles on it with no previous maintenance records :redbrick: so In attempt to become one with my truck I want to do a lot of the general maintenance that goes into these monsters. heres my list so far

TRANSMISSION-
Clutch, pilot bearing, and release bearing-300$
Throwout bearing-50$
(throwout bearing is whining and rattling so I might as well replace the clutch while im down there)

ENGINE-
Timing belt, water pump, tensioner bearing and idler bearing- 280$
Spark plugs-25$

What I need help with are all the suspension parts such as lower ball joints and such, im wanting to replace all rubber parts again just for peace of mind)
any help with my list will be appreciated and maybe once I get this finished I can start the build thread!!

Get new wires when you do the spark plugs.

There are guys way more knowledgeable then I am, but what I did yesterday (Yeah, happy halloween to me) Was replace U-Joints, LBJ, Inner and Outer Tie Rods. I think the tie rods and LBJ are the biggies for it. Correct me if im wrong though.
 
Don't forget replace all the fluids and replace the radiator if its the original one. When I replaced my lower ball joints I tore the boot on the outer tie rods when I was removing it. They were so seized together that I just ordered new outer tie rods and called it day. This with what everyone else recommended so far would make your truck built proof.

Oh yeah that's all stuff I do as interval maintenance, and I don't think I need to replace the radiator, being 5 speed I thought I was immune to the "pink milkshake" but I could be very wrong.

okay that's great, what brand did you use for your LBJs, tie rods and U-joints? I see a lot but im not sure if I should go with generic or OEM?
 
thought id add a few pics of my ball joints and tie rods, don't know if they should have so much grease around them? im still new to 4runners and Toyotas in general and any advice would be greatly appreciated. found this on ebay, are these reputable parts or just crap?

All the advice I've read says go with Toyota parts. I buy the lesser items locally and generally get a 15% ish discount because it is a common practice and I ask nicely.
I bought a 99 limited w 180,000 miles in April and have been replacing, installing, and servicing.
Bigger stuff, like my new Tundra rotors ($130 for both) for Tundra brake upgrade came from an online supplier of genuine Toyota parts. Olathe Toyota Parts. I'm naming names because they advertise on this site. Got calipers (13WL) with new pads from local junk yard ($50x2, off a Sequoia). Caliper rebuild kit, $12 local.
Road force tire balance with straight track ($100, Hunter GSP 9700 machine, look at Hunter's website) and alignment ($50), local Les Schwab.
Plugs, wires, air filter, pcv valve, fuel filter ($185, local). Radiator fan ($100 local). CV boot (online). Brake fluid flush after installing Speed Bleeders (originals, via online site, great cheap upgrade, $30).
Grease-able sway bar bushings, end link bushings (energy suspension); steering rack bushings (Wheelers), all three cheap and easy. engine ($55x2) and transmission ($70) mounts (online). mine were shot.
Tranny cooler and magnefine filter, $100. AirLift suspension air bags, less than $100.
Today: front and rear diff fluid, transfer case fluid, with new crush washers, $70.
I'm in @ $1200. Last will be shocks, maybe sometime next year. Maybe sliders.

LBJ Went with the Napa Brand. Got U-Joint the precision ones at O'relilys. They have zerk fittings, so it's nice to be able to grease everything. And for inner and outer tie rods went with the tacoma ones at Napa.

Alot of guys will say go OEM, but I feel like Napa has comparable quality and is cheaper, which for a college student makes the world of difference.

Man, I'd stay away from Ebay parts on my suspension. I don't have faith in China made parts. And im not sure on the greasing part. Mine are all sealed so there isn't much I can do (2wd :( )

I have a few pictures from my install and there is a great youtube video of them doing it online to a tacoma. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.
 
Most members here would recommend only using OEM parts, myself included. Get new OEM bolts with the LBJ's and apply some Blue Loctite, if peace of mind is what you seek! Also consider a trans cooler, B&M 70624 is the most used here. I have the 70268 but experience high temps when driving at slow speeds in 4hi.

That's odd, I have seen a few guys running the 70268 with no issues, even down here in the blazing heat. How do you have yours mounted?

I chose one with an LPD, low pressure drop, bypass. Tru-cool 4544. Read these:

Some very excellent advice here! Stuff I never thought of. I would have said lower ball joint and trans cooler except op said he had 5 spd. I would never have thought about greasing the drive shaft but I'm going to do that now too. Also where would you get bolts? Is there like a bolt kit or just have to get them individually as they come up?
 
Unless your clutch is slipping, i wouldnt bother changing it, if you do go on ebay and buy the kit for like $250 to get the Aisin brand clutch flywheel kit with pilot and throwout bearing, as i believe that to be the OEM brand. I put like a $170 shipped full (clutch,flywheel throw out etc) kit in from some random ebay seller, mine knock on wood is fine, but i was on a budget at the time.

5 speeds don't need a tranny cooler, Grease all the greasable parts every oil change, and at each oil change is a good time to check the diffs, trans, and t-case (assuming its 4x4) fluid levels to see if they need to be topped off.

Awsome advice...im under my runner almost everyday (pavement ftw) and always thinkin there is something I could be doin?
