Memorial Day weekend camping and wheeling?

Any plans for camping and wheeling over the memorial long weekend?

I gotta get out but would rather wheel with some peeps. Wife will be riding along as usual but always better at night having a bunch of people to BS with around a camp fire.

It's potentially going to be hot hot hot. I usually do DV trips October - March.

Purely for example today according to Google it is 105F in Death Valley. So I have to imagine that it will be over 110F easily in another two weeks.

Family members die every year in DV due to heat. What if your truck breaks down, that could happen to anyone, and then you are stranded with no AC in the burning dessert.

Been wheeling in worse temps than that in Oz. It’s why you go in groups!

You may need more than 2-3 days for DV. Went last December, for 5 days, and did a big loop through the West half of it. It seemed the perfect weather (maybe a little nippy at night, with temps dipping below 20°F), but pleasant enough during the day to get out of the car without insta-baking.



Charlie earned a temporary nickname after that trip: DVD (as in Death Valley Dog).


Another drawback of going when it's hot: you'll have to be prepared to rescue Jeeps.

If aiming for the Sierra, look up national forest boundaries/names then google for jeep trails, OHV trails etc. Alternatively, look up the natl forest areas on satellite/earth and you might be able to guestimate some areas that are probably good pickings for camps. There's always random road closures in national forests that are hard to figure out from closure bulletins, but once you're up there you'll be able to explore and find something. Start with Sequoia National Forest both below and above Lake Isabella. Don't discount the mountain range that runs along the east side of the 395 too. Hope that helps as that's pretty much all I do.

Any favorite spots you’re willing to share? Looks like wester sierras will be wet or snowy, depending on elevation, so I’m now thinking eastern. Love 395 but hoping for some forest camping.

Go North on the 395 just a bit further and check out the Buttermilk's or June Lake area just north of Mammoth. Even further is Tioga pass which is very nice this time of year. Another option is southern Sierra's like Monache Meadows off Sherman Pass where I just camped.
