Microsoft forcing updates again

This is a 2010 Lenovo M72e Ivy Core i5 Win 10 1607. So far this is the higher Win 10 version they have drivers for. I am using a MS program to stop 17xx version from installing. I guess they are working around that now.
I was running utilities and stepped away from this PC. Came back to find my browser off and 'Installing updates, this will require multiple reboots.' I powered down and booted back up to see 'trying to restore previous version' (I really wondered if Win 7 was coming back) About 15 minutes later it finally booted up OK. good old M$

It did that to me yesterday but I wasn’t paying attention so it updated. Haven’t noticed anything different but haven’t really dug into it yet.
 
I absolutely hate Windows 10. Prefetch is the worst. I have to spend a good five minutes every morning cleaning memory before logging on to the Internet.
 
I'm about to build a new desktop system based on an 8-core Ryzen CPU. I intend to install Ubuntu Linux on it rather than Windows 10. Wish me luck...
 
Any of you MS genius can help me? I got the free Windows 10 upgrade, was Win 7 before. Now the computer just shuts down for no apparent reason. I haven't actually seen it happen. I usually go in and out so I tried just lock computer, then sleep or just let it go to screensaver... but about every 5th time it'll just shut down... Grrrr. I did a disk check, then a memory check, then everything is updated and no threats according to Defender...

What next?


It's my work laptop. Acer Aspire 5552-7474. My only Windows machine just so I can run the random Windows only software. All my other rigs are Macs. I had it running dual Linux which is much more stable but I can't get drivers for certain things so I can't use all of the laptop functions...

try looking into the event log, under control panel\administrative tools (depending on the version, could also be a right click or a menu option). Look for anything with a red icon on it around the time it shut down

it says 12 times since 1/9/2018. (I upgraded end of year)

I remember seeing this on a dell. the solution for that was to disable dell power management. I would suspect your issue is quite similar. it may be an installed update, or it may be running in the tray. basically this is a bad driver and your vendor never updated it to run with 10. the native driver, the one that comes with windows will do whatever you need

Yeah I tried messing with the power management before via Windows 10. didn't do much but with your suggestion I straight up uninstalled the acer power management. Fingers crossed
 
So far this new 1709? version runs faster on my Core i5, 16 GB MB. Happy. Guess I stop waiting for the other shoe to drop.

you will be fine, the only thing you need to watch out for is the laptop reinstalling it

Man I was rolling for like 3 days and then CRASH.... same error essentially. I didn't witness it because like I said I like to leave my computer on...

-on Lock
-On Screen Saver after which eventually it sleeps

check to see if it reinstalled the power manager. I will try to find out what I did to resolve this on the dells, I thought it was just uninstalling it, but now that I think of it, there may of been something else

try changing your power options to not run performance or not balanced, I seem to remember that being an issue, or something I tried, not sure which
