Hopefully you got a new radiator to go with that new trans. Otherwise you're milkshaking as we speak...

96 sr5….with @ 155,000…..new/remanufactured trans cost about 2500..including a trans cooler…what a freeking nightmare. I bought a toyota because I wanted a solid-dependable truck….damn. Rear axle seal blew out, as the rear axle breather valve was faulty. So heres my list of things I need….
Front brakes, all 4 ball joints, new muffler, rear brakes, rear axle seals, valve cover gaskets, rear springs, new shocks all around….eh, should only be a few thousand dollars…

The problem is that most of that stuff would be typical maintenance of any vehicle with 155k - save for the milshake of course. That does not make the 4runner unreliable....

My transmission died via the milkshake as well. Fortunately I was able to take lemons and make lemonade by swapping in a 5-speed. I probably never would have done it if my transmission never failed.

I wonder how many people have their trannys die after the milkshake and at what point after? That would be a interesting poll. I had the milkshake a couple years ago and my tranny is still going strong thank goodness.

That almost makes me wish my transmission would die...almost.

How was the swap? I've heard it isn't very fun (as transmission swaps go) for the 4runner.

Sounds like you got quite lucky. I spent a ton of time flushing and replacing transmission fluid to no avail.

It was actually suprisingly easy in hind sight. There was really nothing complicated about it. Only ran 3-4 new wires. You can check out my thread in my signature for full details.

to the OP - You're gonna need to buy some tools and have the desire to do some of the work yourself. 15 (or so) yr old trucks need work.

You may need a new shop as well, pretty sure you only have two ball joints... Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Two that fail, the lowers. Otherwise the upper arms have ball joints, and I the tie rods have what I would call a ball joint.

And Boulder FTW! :D

yup…got my tools..difficult to find shop space for me, but i try to do all my own work. I love my truck, and I realize that it is old…. I was just cry babying about typical maintenance i guess. Money is tight, so its hard to swallow big repairs. My plan is to prioritize a list of things that need to be done, and start checking things off. This forum has helped me big time. Without it, I'm sure I would have much more troubles….thanks guys!

I bought mine right after it happened to the previous owner. They had the rad changed and got it flushed and I had it flushed twice at the time of purchase. In the end, 40,000km's later, I had to rebuild the transmission and I put in a tranny cooler to prevent relapse ;).

MEH, milkshake after 155K, my tranny blew at 98K.

I had just bought it at 94K from the dealer as "certified pre-owned". Did a bunch of maintenance and the fluid looked brown, dark brown (was brand new when I bought it). Took it in for a flush and two weeks later it was winding up in first gear and SLAMMING into 2nd. Limped to the dealer in first and they said it was shot. Long story short: I did some research later and the PO had a radiator and trans flush just before ditching it. I suspect he had a milkshake and got rid of it while the tranny still functioned. I've put about 50K on it since the "new" tranny was installed, but I'm thinking of another flush and a new rad anyway...
