MillerPKA Build Thread #2

did you do any signifcant adjustment from stock length to something different on the adjustables to fix pinion angle?

i'm wondering how much people adjust and how (longer/shorter than stock) to get the pinion angle to a more stock angle.

do you have adjustable upper and lower?

I have the adjustable uppers and lowers yeah, but I installed the uppers a few weeks before the lowers so I set them to stock length. From what I've seen it's slight adjustments to each that will yield a better angle. I'll definitely update when I get around to it.

Here's a shot from yesterday in Torrey Pines. Fall is in the air - even here.

Another awesome build MillerPKA !! I'm liking this one even more than the old one.

And after reading all through this thread, I am really wondering your thoughts on the 5VZ + supercharger now that you've ran it for a while. I found it interesting that you were originally thinking of dropping a 2UZ in and then ended up going with the SC instead. Thoughts on the SC route? How's it treating you? Any other fuel mods yet thus far? (been a while since you posted on here it seems...) Have you driven that GX470 much? How does your rig's power compare to that beast? Can you keep up with that GX with your 4runner on the highway? on fast desert roads?

Reason I'm asking is cause I just came from an '05 GX470 that I really didnt want to sell but had to at the time and then decided I really needed a small truck anyway for my type of wheeling/camping...so I bought back into a 1st Gen Tacoma....and I gotta say, I am really, really, REALLY missing that 2UZ in that GX470... This Tacoma is a freaking slug compared to that thing (and I had the GX decently built up). So I have been thinking about similar upgrades as you initially... a nice, small toyota V8 swap... a 1UZ or 2UZ. I know it'd be a ton of $$ for a swap, but once you're into the SC + URD and other fuel mods, its well over $5-6K if you are doing all the labor yourself, and even more if you're having to get professional help. And then I've heard and read of some guys just having constant fueling/tuning issues with the 5VZ + SC. I dont want to get into a mess like that. Would much rather have a NA 1UZ/2UZ dropped in and just run. (Plus if 2UZ, you can do that awesome 5-speed auto as well!!)

The 1st Gen Tacoma is just about perfect for me in every other way, I would not trade it for a Tundra nor back for a GX470 (nor other SUV) so I'm def going to be going one way or the other on the SC vs small Toy V8....

Anyway, would love to hear your real-world experience/thoughts on it.

Thanks!

its been a long while since ive been on and saw that you mentioned somewhere in the thread about using an eye bolt for the limb risers on the ARB and that what i did when i had done that mod. It worked really well and i i had the cord attached via a mini D-ring link so i was able to easily remove it and reinstall without alot of effort.

Ill check my old thread to see if i can find a pic of it.

Sorry for the wait man. I completely understand where you're coming from. The supercharger is great, no doubt. I don't have fuel mods yet and still the power is immediately noticeable and a huge help with the regear. Still, I have a ton of weight on this thing and only adding more, so I do worry about how much stress weight + boost puts on this engine despite maintenance. I think the 2UZ swap will eventually happen in the next year or two. My problem is I work in motorsports marketing which helps subsidize my out of pocket, and going into something like the 2UZ swap would be 100% personally funded, which with everything else going on is a huge investment.

Latest mods have been a dual battery setup with a TuffStuff CS144 alt upgrade. For that I used the National Luna dual battery monitor, Optima Red/Yellow tops and the RuffStuff Specialties Dual battery tray. While it was down I also changed my intake piping as well as tackled a bunch of maintenance - timing, water pump, t-stat, valve cover gaskets, pulleys - everything I encountered on the way down was replaced. Also painted the valve cover gaskets to brighten things up down there. When the weather breaks here I'm finishing up the maintenance with Tundra brake upgrade, transmission service, LCA bushings, steering rack bushings, SS brake lines, panhard drop bracket and new fuel filter.

The expedition project I've made has been gaining lots of ground, and we've been commissioned for our first expedition. If you're interested, you can check out our landing page at The All Terrain Tour - Outworld Overland, but essentially it's 9 days from San Diego > Zion> Moab > Telluride. We're working with a ton of companies on this, including Lib Tech for our Telluride sessions, and have even hired a videographer from Warren Miller's production team to capture the action. This is a huge step for us and hope everyone enjoys the final product. Regardless there will be a ton of good footage along the way.

We got a major care package from ARB - front bumpers, air compressors, tire inflate kits, swag tents, awnings, living rooms, camp chairs, ground tents, 50 qt fridge. The reality of this upcoming trip is finally sinking in.

I'm spending just as much time on our other 2 builds, the 2005 GX470 and our latest addition the 07 4Runner. Trying to get these things right before diving back into mine. Next major step will be the interior. Haven't decided on going complete reupholster or just doing Wet Okoles, but regardless the rest of the interior is being changed to gray/black and will eventually add a storage system to the tailgate section for better organization as well as a slide-out for the fridge.

Hope all my friends are doing well and most of you I'm keeping up with on Facebook through those groups. But anyways, miss ya love ya and I'll be back.

Word of caution to anyone considering the cs144 upgrade, be wary of remanufactured parts! I grabbed my first alt from O'Reilly just because it was local, and right before we installed I noticed two small cracks in the back of the housing. Not willing to take the risk, I went to Napa instead and found one with no cracks. However, the first day driving home my truck died and wouldn't crank. Turns out the housing had completely cracked. Once my TuffStuff alternator came in I removed the NAPA one, and not only was it completely cracked along both top through bolts, the cast was complete shit and some of the crappiest metal I've ever seen. I spent an extra $90 on the alternator I have now, but it's put my mind at ease.

Your 4runner is awesome. If you're getting paid to take this road trip then I'm totally jealous. Looks like a great time. Good luck.

Haven't been around lately but wanted to share our latest trips. 9 day, 2000 mile trip from San Diego to Telluride was a blast with barely any issues. I'm still chasing a pop in the rear and I'm thinking it's one of the control arms. Moab was a blast and despite only having a day there think we got a great intro course to the area. Only damage was scuffs on the rear bumper of the Lexus and a new annoying chirp that followed my truck the rest of the trip. FINALLY pinpointed the noise this weekend to a lower radiator bolt. Unscrewed, PB blasted and reinstalled and all is well.

'Overlanding' and off road productions in general have blown up recently, but I'm still going to give it a shot. We brought a professional videographer along to document our trip and the footage is pretty spectacular. Shooting for a 15-20 minute documentary around the beginning of summer. The next couple months we'll be spent in the editing room but wanted to share some of our shots.

If anyone is going to be at Mammoth next weekend, 2 of our rigs will be on display in the main village next to the gondola. Feel free to stop by and say hey!

After a long stint with the SE FJ Anthracite wheels, I finally found motivation to change. Happier than ever and completely updates the look of these rigs.

Your brakes are red now.

Your brakes didn't used to be red.

Why are your brakes red?

The new meats look nice. Spicy.

Like your red brakes.

Spicy.

Haha I honestly liked the copper! When I upgraded to Tundra brakes they came red and just didn't feel like painting over them. I reckon it fits the scheme a bit better as well.

I was just looking at those same ones for mine as well for the exact same reasons. Man they look good!!!!! Great job!

Well I liked your rig before, but those new wheels really look fantastic on your 4Runner. That grey and black is sharp.

Regarding your new wheels.... I wanted to get back to camp and double check before I stuck my foot in my mouth.

When I was looking at those I was looking for a new wheel and tire package for when I go to 35s. I wanted to move up to a 17" wheel and I only saw those in a 17x7 (looking at them on ebay). Since 35s are all a 12.5" tire, that would be too narrow. All the resarch I've done, 8" wheel width is the as narrow as recommended for a 12.5" tire.

Do they only come in a 7" width? You're running a wider tire. I'll backtrack through your thread a little bit and see if I missed something.

Nope you're right, 17x7 with 35x1250. Not recommended but I've ran it several times on the first build with minimal issues. Crowning/uneven wear is going to be the worry but it was worth it to me. An alternative would be checking out FN Wheels' replica's as they come wider and in different offsets I believe.

Last week I left San Diego for a bit of an action sports circuit. A weekend of snowboarding, mountain biking, off roading, camping and surfing. Joined a fellow 5th gen who was already heading up to Mammoth Lakes and had an absolute blast.

Trucks been phenomenal but some maintenance and upgrade are in the pipeline. Mostly boring stuff but eyeing some potential major changes.

Not much changing with this thing but starting to look into an interior remodel soon as well as 7th injector.

Last weekend I replaced the injectors to try and resolve this hot start misfire. Started in Sedona a few weeks back then became more persistent. Swapped plugs, then wires, then coil packs, and still had it. So I figured instead of pulling stuff apart to just change one I'd do all 6 and the fuel filter. Problem is gone and we're back to normal.

Decided to try out some vinyl fender striping as a subtle Ivan Stewart-age throwback. The documentary that we filmed last year is on the tail end of post production and I'll post that up when it's ready.

I think these wheels in black would look fantastic!

When are you planning on the interior, really excited to see what you do there. If its anything like the rest of your build I have no doubt it'll be amazing.
