Mods and Accessories - what and when?

I am debating what to do next, so I thought I would see what everybody else has been doing.

here are my questions:

what were the first (up to) 10 mods or accessories for your 5th gen, in order?

what are your top 10 real-world mods or accessories remaining to be done, or on your wish list?

for me, done:
1) AT tires
2) Weathertech F&R liners
3) XD HIDs
4) 9011 high beams
5) XD LED reverse lights
6) Console Vault (thanks Jicko!)
7) Antman cargo mod (thanks Antman!)
ETA: 8) Fiamm freeway blaster hi & lo horns


coming up:
1) Weathertech cargo liner
2) Drabbits rack (on order)
3) diff and other breathers
4) ham radio antenna
5) something with the fog lights, dunno what yet
6) LED lighting, probably a light bar
7) aluminum skid plates, will also deter converter theft I hope
8) a lift, with the smoothest-riding coilovers I can find, kings or the new OME bypass shocks?
9) sliders, wife and kid will want steps

weathertech mats and cargo liner and handheld CB from Cabelas first. Then I did K and N CAI, & a 3 inch lift. Replaced all the interior lights with LEDs and a console vault Group buy on rock sliders from Schrockworks is next.

I've found just with these mods alone my T4R grin factor has increased by 62%. And I've been able to fully navigate ALL of the challenging concrete jungle trails of Dallas including George Bush tollway and I75

It's all about matching your Mods with your intended use for the truck. I'd love to go nuts with an overland style build but my limited camping trips per year don't justify the expense and I put the money to other uses...like emergency savings fund, 401k, etc.

Once I find the stock T4R to be inadequate for my needs I'll add to the mods.

Doubtful there will be many considering the many challenging trails my family navigated in a stock land cruiser in Tanzania and Kenya when I was growing up.

You'll find the T4Rs capability stock exceeds most people's pucker tolerance.

The roof rack is my only real necessity as an upgrade. The rest is just for the enjoyment of doing it. I'll do some off reading but nothing like some of you guys.

I have been an Remote Control junkie pretty much my whole life. Planes, helis, and cars. Pretty much impossible to buy one of those without upgrading them. Now owning a 4runner I feel like I have a giant rc truck that needs to be upgraded.

I need to buy a floor jack and some jack stands so I can actually do some of the upgrades first.

Wednesday leaving on a week long trek:

Leaving Fernley on the way to Vegas will do a bit of 4 wheeling around Coaldale, Tonopah, and Goldfield on the way down.

Will spend a couple days around Vegas then head up to Beaver Utah via St George, Cedar City and Parowan.

An overnight in Beaver then west thru Baker and Great Basin Nat. Park. and and overnight in Ely Nev.

From Ely continuing west checking out the ghost towns of Hamilton, Treasure City, Belmont Mill and then into Eureka for another overnight and local exploring.

From Eureka head on west leisurely back to Fernley.

I will have a nice little write-up with photos when I get back.

This trek will be about 1200 miles; about 300 of it off road. The only thing required is the good strong tires and my usual box of necessaries:

Because they offer additional protection when I'm going past brush in the desert, and I can line-x them if I really beat them up. They're also a hell of a lot cheaper than having aluminum ones fabricated and adding additional weight.

Ok and I choose aluminum as my material of choice over plastic to protect my fenders. Same reason I had them on my jeep. Simple

Mods, which ones and when, etc.

I haven't done much to my '14 Trail Premium, but as it's my daily driver plus the go-to out-of-town/mountains/desert vehicle---it's a little bit of a balancing act to equip it for the most important situations---but in my case, not outfit it so that it ends up looking like an assault vehicle (although that would be cool to have;-)...I've been a Realtor for over 30 years and way past feeling compelled to drive luxury-sport sedans---and as much as I don't need to impress anyone with what I drive, I don't want to shock someone's sensitive sensibilities, either. So for me, "mild...not wild" is what I'm doing with mine:

WeatherTec liners front and rear, and cargo area
BudBuilt Beefy sliders with full diamond plate insert(told the wife I needed "running boards;-)
Shrockworks Front bumper with headlight hoops, shackles (no winch)

Currently, driving the stock Bridgestones until they wear out, and will get the BF Goodrich KO2 275-70/17 and Bilstein 5100's (no KDSS on my rig).

I'll built a box for the area aft of the rear seat, that I can stow any amount of recovery gear including a 48" Hi-Lift jack, and still be able to stow a lot of gear on the box top--- my vehicle doesn't lend itself to lashing a bunch of tools onto the exterior that I only "might" need very infrequently.

I'm always impressed with the great variety of ingenious mods and additions that forum members here are adding to their vehicles, and methinks that one could circumnavigate the globe any route you wanted to with a properly outfitted 4Runner. For me, I appreciate the all-weather versatility of this vehicle that's descended from a winning history of Toyota's offroad experience and credibility (it's my fourth 4R), and with what I've got, I'm going most places that most people, can't.
