Mounting a garmin unit...

I know this isn't a cool mod like all of our lifts, etc...but figured it might help SOMEONE out there! So, after trying several different ways to mount a garmin to look somewhat clean I came up with the following way - and I do NOT like it on the wind shield or dash...wires hanging, etc. I was thinking about getting an aftermarket head unit with nav, but this is a nice CHEAP alternative in the meantime.

My first attempt was kind of funny, but worked - I bought role of electrical tape and mounted the suction disc on top (glued)...I then popped it right into the cup holder near the 4 wheel drive shifter...fit like a glove and tight, so doesn't budge - and attached the garmin suction mount and there you go! Only problem = you cant use that cup holder anymore.

So...as you see below, I just opened the little door that hides those other compartments...bought a new suction mount disc (with the adhesive) from target for $14...and mounted it on the corner of the upper left compartment. Now, the disc only makes contact on the corners...but it holds, trust me! You can then mount the garmin...plug in the adapter, and even hide the cords in that same compartment you attached the disc to - there is room.

So that is my cheap way to install a garmin (or tom tom) in your 5th Generation 4runner. Plus, you can now use the cup holder (I put my iphone in there) AND you can take off the garmin/mount and the door still closes all the way.

The only issue I see with this is how far down it is. It may be difficult to keep an eye on it and the road at the same time. Be safe, but looks good. :thumb3:

Agreed...but it really has not been an issue for me. And of course, you have the option to turn on the turn-by-turn commands if you are navigating through a city with a lot of turns!

Not a bad option either...wonder how the fit is, though...plus the 4runner has wires for the backup camera, etc. I read some review that this makes the mirror less stable...but let us know if you do this mod. I just like mine since I can take it off easily and the mount is easily hidden. I dont use GPS that much.

Here's an option I'm considering -
RAM Mirror Mount

Amazon.com: RAM Mounting Systems RAP-B-191AU Mirror Mate Mount - Ford, Chrysler, Toyota: Electronics

It would be nice to tap into moonroof power source to avoid any cables hanging down a windshield.

I remember a thread by Harper7 and others about mounting a radar detector there and using a special harness to pull power from the mirror. Seemed like a good solution. I wonder if there is a way to use this same harness to provide power for the GPS using this mount.

UPDATE: Found the thread. It might work with some customization. See post #6 or 7 in this thread for wiring ideas.

What about simply adding a 12 volt outlet in the top of the dash?

Blue Sea 1010 12V DC Cigarette Light Plug Only - $4

Run a 12v switched and ground wire and voila :) no wire mess running down your dash and the nav unit can sit nicely in the corner of the windshield.

Okki

Tedstryker: I have a Sony GPS mounting in a similar position in my Gen 4, do you have any problems getting a signal the first time you fire up the GPS? I need to place the Sony on the dash to get the signal then it is good all day in the lower position.

This product looks great but will it block your view out the windshield? I'm 6'3" with a long torso and the rear view mirror blocks my view out, I could imagine more of a block.
