That's a great looking setup. They've got a 62x37 size that might be wide enough to U-bolt to the factory rails.

Have you had a chance to use the Traction Jacks?

Boogie, the Rhino Rack option might work. Hard to tell from the pictures but how far higher than the rails does it sit? Specs say it's 5 inches high, so I'm guessing 5 inches above cross bars which means two or three inches past the rails. But your picture seems to show almost flush setup.

Second question: how sturdy is it if using ratchet straps to tie down objects? Can't tell if the side tuning is flimsy or not.

Rhino Rack has both wire mesh baskets and wire mesh platforms. His is the platform. What you likely saw specs for was the basket.

Rhino rack steel mesh platform sz small fits inbetween the factory rails and has a low profile.

I am so glad you posted these pics. I have been planning this same setup for months but could not pull the trigger until I looked at all the options. This has convinced me to just do it.

I'm going to be in the southern parts of Utah. Between some really long trails and availability of gas stations I'm playing it safe.

Because of vapors and spillage my requirement is to keep it outside the car.

I have an ok roof basket that I could mount and then put the cans in it and secure with straps. Just trying to avoiding doing it.

IMO, you're better off just planning your gas stops. I spend much of my time in southern Utah, have a roof rack and rear bumper with 2 can carrier, and I really only use it to carry water and firewood.

So far it's been sturdy enough for me. Let's see, I've had the traction jacks, box spring matress, a carbon fiber hood, and one of those cargo bags filled with luggage mounted to it.

Thanks for the info. I've driven through the AZ/CO/UT/NM corners area before and gas stations were few and far in between. So I was worried of driving 50 to 100 miles off road, then get back on road and not find a station. In all fairness in 4 LOW situations I think I get 7 to 8 MPG. So in theory I should have some left...just don't want to risk it. But this does make me feel better.

Agreed. I've been road-tripping all over the US for years, and a 5-gallon gas can has saved my ass a few times. Mostly due to big swings in mileage (4WD, crazy winds, etc) or stations that don't exist. Once because I wasn't paying attention.

It's cheap insurance, and it also allows me to help people out who run out for all the same reasons.

I got it Online at eTrailer for 186. It's the Rhino mesh 49x37. That's about as cheap as I could find it with mounting hardware.
