Welcome to Seattle. It's such a great area, you'll sure love it. Check out the Mt. Baker - Snoqualmie National Forest. They have many many fire service roads, you'll not run out anytime soon. Depending on where you are in the Seattle area, try out Stevens Pass area down on HighWay Two- Take the "Old Cascade Highway and turn off on "Iron Mountain Trail". Also, try the Cascade Loop and the Mountain Loop. There are some Sand Dunes in Grant County, one is right off of the Columbia River the other is near Lake Moses, both only a few hours drive.
I don't know of any 4Runner groups, would be awesome to get one going. I know the Tacoma World guys go out fairly often, and they post on here every now and again before they meet up. I think they do a lot of stuff near Evans Creek ORV Park and other trails near Mt. Rainier.
As you may know by now, snow is starting to fly in most areas, Stevens Pass, Snoqualmie Pass, Mt. Baker and Mt. Rainier. So be careful driving up 5000ft on a narrow service road.
I'm always up for exploring some new areas and love going back to old ones. Let me know if you want to hook up.

That would be an interesting trip. I reckon you'd have to have lot os extra fuel. Never seen a Forest Service with a fuel station... WA State is a little less than 300 miles long (N-S), at least on i5 from like Blaine, WA to Vancouver, WA. Doing 65+ that is easily doable with probably a good 130-150mi range left... Going Forest Service roads you'll not make it the whole trip. But, oh man would that be a fun trip. I've never heard of this road. I'll have to looking to it for next year.
Sounds good, down to go out just about anytime with a few days notice. Look forward to talking. Group trip sounds great.

Washington Backcountry Discovery Route (WABDR)
Oregon to Canada.
OP: HWY 2 has lots of places to go exploring but right now they are likely to have snow. In any case, I'll google map it for you.
Beckler River Road. Will have snow this time of year. But when it melts there is some places to explore. Not a ton of places but there is some nice views.

This will take you up to Tonga Ridge. There will certainly be snow there right now. You will likely find snow at the top into May or June.

What kind of tires do you have now? And what kind are you getting?
Outstanding! 5-6days to cross nearly 600 miles...Looking forward to that. This will defiantly be on my spring trip list. I see it's broken in to different sections, might have to do the one South of Ellensburg down to OR before the end of 2013.
I wonder what the average elevation of that part is.?
Kurtis, have you done this as a whole or any portion there of?
I've done the southern section of the WABDR on a motorcycle (Stevenson to Randle), and some parts of it would be pretty tight for a 4R - and I know it gets very tight up north near Conconully. One of the guys that pioneered the route did it in an FJ, but it got pretty scratched up.

I have not done it. It is on my list while I am stationed up here. The club I run with a lot attempted the first part of it earlier this year but I am not sure how it turned out. I'm pretty sure there will be snow up there right now. The snow level right now for most of Washington is in the 2200-3000'.
Moab is also on my list. Probably summer of '15 since I'm shooting for the end of next summer for my SAS. I'll be looking for a trip report.:thumb::thumb:

Still running stocks. Have about half the tread left (7/8") at almost 36k miles. They're not worn out yet so it's always that stupid practical voice. Tires I'm looking to replace them with will either be Duratracs or Michelin LTX A/T2. Most likely go A/T2s since I seem to regularly drive the 800 miles each way back and forth from Seattle to the Bay Area, which makes it hard to justify the DTs, which will be initially louder than A/T2s though I know both will make more noise as the wear, probably still go load "E" because between towing my RV and desire to offroad. Lack of skids, sliders, and good tires prevents me from mentally saying it's ok to really go do offroad things (like Evans Creek ORV) because since I don't have them Murphy's Law is bound to come down and slap me and leave me up a shit creek. We have gone up the Forest Service Roads to Boardman Lake on the Mountain Loop Parkway, which was a little rutted but there were also Jettas going up it, so I don't consider it much of a "challenge".

having wheeled up there a lot, that's pretty accurate too.

This! I'm from Redmond/Issaquah and lived there for 23 years besides the military and moving to Tucson a couple years ago. Tinkham has some great spots and I used to drive the ogging roads for hours and can go pretty far back.
