Moving the oil filter location my 1998

Anyone doing this? New here, so if this has been discussed, I apologize. I changed my oil for the first time on my 98 T4R with the V6, and man was that a huge MESS! Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but trying to get to the oil filter and removing caused oil to drain everywhere.

I'm looking at possibly moving the location of the oil filter to an easier to access location. Is this a good idea? Has anyone done this before?? What kit are you guys using? Where are you putting it? I've found a couple of kits but don't want to waste my time or coin, if it's a bad idea.

It's really difficult to do it without making a mess. Heard of one guy wrapping a bag around it while he unscrews it, then just letting it fall into the bag. I usually just take off the skid plate, let it drip, and take the time to clean up after.

I looked into relocating for the same reason, and did some research. It's definitely been discussed before. The problem is, you are very likely moving the height of the oil filter from where it is (and where it was designed to be). I couldn't find any solid answer on whether or not this could be bad, but I ended up not doing it because I didn't want to cause any weird oil starvation upon starting or after doing a filter change.

Hopefully someone else will come on here and say they did it and it's fine so we can both go ahead and do it

You can relocate it but I'd think it's easier to just drop the skids. The more connections and lines you have just leaves you more prone to failure and you don't want an oil feed failure. That's a bad day!

I did a filter relocation on my 66 Galaxie because the headers that I installed came under an inch away from the filter and it would super heat the oil passing through the filter.

It is a mess and annoying but at least you only have to do it every 3-5k. Remote oil filters have been used for years in all sorts of vehicles and bikes. If it were me, I'd leave it be. I might have to try the bag idea Wooden Payload mentioned, that's sounds genius!

I recently bought a Fumoto quick drain plug #103N and a 3' piece of hose that, I don't have to take my skids off and I can feed the old oil into a container on the side if the truck instead of underneath - this was easier than moving the drain plug location.

Not talking about the drain plug. He's talking about the filter.

If you do this, I don't think you'd have anything to worry about. The filer is in the location it's been designed for because there is no room to put it anywhere else. The starter is on the other side, and the exhaust is in the way so it can't stand vertical.

Moving the filter won't result in dry starts, because the oil pump is located in the oil pan. If anything, it'd be like starting your truck every day. The way the filter sits now, all the oil drains out anyway into the pan.

Moving the filter wouldn't hurt anything. The trick would be finding somewhere to mount it. There's not a whole lot of room in the engine bay to be able to do so, let alone making it easily accessible.

I also have given' this some serious thought. First off, as Doc said, no worries running one. We just have to find a spot to mount it...so you don't make an even bigger mess!

If you do this...don't go cheap on your hose's or connectors. I plan on this being my next project...I'm going to use braided stainless steel lines and Russell's -AN fittings! No worries about leaks or torn/cut hoses. A little bit extra money...but a nice peace of mind!!

Hopefully I only have to drop my skid plate one or two more times to change the oil...then I'll have this done. Hey...if y'all decide to do this, post up some pics please!!

You'd be better off just buying an impact gun to help get the skids off faster! It just seems pointless IMHO.

Toyota did a pretty good job designing this setup and as with anything, the more that you mod it, the less reliable it becomes.

The location isn't THAT bad. Moving it will only introduce more leak points. The stock location keeps it out of harms way too.

I remove the skids and make a drain chute out of a piece of cardboard bent into a V shape. Little to no mess.

Throw a wad of paper towels under it to catch the spill. Turn the steering while full lock to the driver side. Reach in and be quick. Paper towels get most of it and just wipe up as much as you can.

Why don't you access the filter through the driver side wheel well? remove the rubber mat and you can clearly see the oil filter. I use a tool and few extensions to make it loose.

I used to drop the skid plate to do an oil change and now not.

It is really not bad to do an oil change in the 5VZFE

I got a pair of work gloves with the hundreds of little rubber dots, and hand tightened my oil filter last four times. Just have to turn hard to driver's side to reach it.
