Moving to Albuquerque, what do I need to know?

So the Air Force has decided it is time for me to move from Edwards AFB to Kirtland AFB!!! I know I am excited, my wife has mixed feelings, haha. So what does a guy need to know about New Mexico and the Albuquerque area? Where are the off-road and camping spots I need to know about? Anything I need for warning about? We are coming from the Mojave Desert, so we know about the heat, but we are both Californians, so we don't really know what else to expect. Thanks for the help!!!!!

Welcome to NM, I'm down at Holloman but my wife and i visit ABQ pretty often. Its a cool place that isnt too big. We are always Hitting trails in the southern part of the state, and there are a bunch of bad ass 3rd gens that hail from NM.

My new shop chief just PCS'd from Edwards also. When will you be down here?

I should be there in Jan as long as the Air Force doesn't change their mind... Haha. I'll be looking for a 3rd Gen as soon as I get out there!!! Our 4th is a family rig that my wife drives. Sold my last trail rig about a year ago, been itching for a new ride and am super excited for a new place to wheel!!

There's quite a few places to wheel in NM and around ABQ. I lived in ABQ from '98 to 2010 but I now live in Grants which is 80 miles west of ABQ. It's a pretty good place depending on where you live at. The food is great in ABQ. Not too far from places like Santa Fe or some good camping/fishing.

Just checked out your build thread, very nice!! I love that it is purpose built and used!! I am looking to do a similar build myself. I'll be shopping for a rig as soon as I get there, and the first two mods will be ARB lockers and 33" tires along with the trimming to run at stock height. I want my tires to tuck at full bump, even when lifted so no reason not to run at stock height. I will do suspension of course as well, but I have expensive plans for that. I am a fabricator so I will more than likely do some sliders and belly armor early on as well. My goal is to keep the rig protected, but also as light as possible to help save the MPG's the best I can within reason. Will do all my skids from 1/8" chromoly plate instead of 3/16" mild steel, things like that.
