I would like to explore Bighorns also. Live close by northern area but never seem to make it up there for other than one day drive thru. Somewhat unique mtns. in that there are lots of flatter areas with open meadows etc., very recreational winter and summer. Had a friend that used to backpack and fish southern part, north of Buffalo - he claimed best mtn. fishing in the country. Other area that really intrigues me is national forest area outside Yellowstone on the east side north of Cody.

I'll have more pics soon - heading out for a little adventure this weekend. And I want to go back to the Bighorns this summer! I want to spend some more time exploring up there. Hopefully we can meet up again then.

Let me know if you want advice for northern WY/parts of Southern MT (MTgirl is good for much of the same region, as well as north/western MT and other areas, she's seen a bit of everything around here!)... The Bighorns are really pretty country - I miss it.
As for the NF you mentioned, that is Shoshone National Forest, where the world record crossbow bull elk rack was just harvested recently (around 408 points!), I've been up in there, and it is regarded apparently as one of the most prime lands/areas for hunting elk in North America.

I would be interested in where you went in Shoshone. If I remember correctly, much of Sunlight Basin is private land but is nearly surrounded by forest service.
Another road I must take soon is up to Hell Roaring Plateau south of Red Lodge. I remember nearly 40 years ago traveling up Beartooth Highway and looking over and thinking I want to go there sometime.

I remember .37 premium gas - 60's. I wasn't driving yet, oops, I mean I didn't have a license yet.... My Dad would let gauge get down to about 1/4 - pull into gas station and hand a $5. bill out window to attendant - he'd tap fender or something when done and away we went with nearly full tank. I could only afford a dollar or two in gas in my first car - a '48 Chevy I paid $10 for, bought a $12 battery, $15 carb and drove hell out of it on local dirt roads until motor blew about a year later.

The area in the Bighorns that I was in and would like to have more time to explore was the more northern area, near the intersection of hwy 14 and 14a. Due to snow and mud and lack of time I didn't get to explore very much last summer. Definitely going back this year!
I'm in Bozeman and grew up in Butte - camping pretty much every summer of my life. I know my way around SW MT pretty well if you need any fishing, camping, hiking, driving suggestions

I'll keep you posted but I think, right now, that I'll probably be making the trip the last week of June at the earliest. I don't want to go too late and miss the mooses but I don't want to go too early and run into snow and mud again.Hellroaring Plateau and the road to Glacier lake Trailhead are good drives. They tend to be a little bumpy so it takes a little time but well worth the effort. Lots of campers on the Glacier Lake road too.

Those pics are from the Livingston area and south of Big Timber in the Absorokas. I made it 10 miles past natural Bridge Falls before hitting any snow/mud/ice. Way further than I expected to get. The Boulder River was really low too.
Kinda scary out there - I hate shoveling snow and I hate driving in it but I know we need it. I hope we get dumped on here soon to keep the fires at bay this summer!

Question? Have you ever seen the Aurora Borealis in you area in late September before? I know it is not frequent that far south but it does happen.

I can't remember ever seeing the aurora here at any time of year. I know there are usually a few nights in the winter when we're supposed to be able to see it but its usually too cloudy. Of course I lived in AK for 2 years and only saw it a couple of times so maybe I'm just unlucky.

That's about what I thought, but I had to ask. I know, it's mostly seen during deep winter closer to the "Circle" but my research also showed that late September was also a high potential as far south as Minnesota.
We watched for it on our overland trip to Prudhoe Bay a couple of years ago, but that dang 22 hours of sun got in the way. Funny how you can quickly adapt to 4 hours of sleep feeling normal.:biggrin2:

Took the Runner out for some fresh air last weekend. And obligatory pic of Runner surrounded by awesome Montana mountains...
As far as a "build" update = got some new shoes a couple weeks ago. The Hankook ATMs that were on it were getting pretty worthless in mud and snow so they had to go. Got some Big O AT's (made by Cooper). Had them on my truck and loved them so I thought I'd see how they do on the Runner. Also found out at that point that I had a bent wheel. Not my fault! And how in the hell do you bend a wheel?!?! I know it happens on trails but I was led to believe this rig never saw more than a gravel road before I got it. So off to ebay I went to hunt down a single stock wheel. After searching t4r.org, tacomaworld, 4runners.com and expedition portal thoroughly of course.
And I just picked up some Thule feet off of CL so I'm a step closer to getting my RTT mounted up for the summer.
