MTgirl's build and adventure log

Those pics are from the Livingston area and south of Big Timber in the Absorokas. I made it 10 miles past natural Bridge Falls before hitting any snow/mud/ice. Way further than I expected to get. The Boulder River was really low too.

Kinda scary out there - I hate shoveling snow and I hate driving in it but I know we need it. I hope we get dumped on here soon to keep the fires at bay this summer!

Love that area. I have cousins who live about 4-5 miles south of Natural Bridge Falls. Go there almost every summer. Have you ever gone farther south along the Boulder to Independence? It's a beautiful, though challenging, drive. Great camping spot at the end of the Boulder Road.

If I would have known you were coming out this way I definitely could have given you a quick tour of the area - not that much was open around that time. And you didn't miss me by much - I live in the Bozeman area, guessing you went into Yellowstone @ Gardiner? I was camping down there the 18th and 19th of April.

Yeah, mostly my fault. This trip was such a short notice thing I wasn't able to warn a lot of people I was coming through. Most of them I met spotted that thread and shot me contact info as I was getting closer to them. That's how I actually met wanderMT over there. And I still missed a lot of people simply because of the schedule I was driving. I rolled into eastern Mt on the 20th and ran down through Gardiner and the West side of Yellowstone down to Ole Faithful on the 21st. I hated that the eastern side was still closed because I wanted to go in through Cody and see the museum there. But it was still a very nice valley drive down from the North.

Best time for Yellowstone and surrounding high mtn. areas is right after Labor Day and school is beginning - crowds have thinned and weather is still nice. Often nice into mid-October but never know after about mid-Sept. DOTs opened Beartooth Highway late Friday afternoon - as planned, in time for Memorial weekend, but heard this afternoon that they closed it again due to blizzard.

3wbdriver - that gives you 3 months to plan, and don't forget to add Glacier Nat. Park to itinerary.:driving:

Sure have!
At the end of the "good" road...

And closer to Independence...

One of my favorite pics from the trip... HomerTaco

One of the guys had a bone stock Taco so he didn't want to drive the trail which meant we couldn't camp up at the top. And the smoke from the forest fires was awful! I will get back up there some day and camp....someday!

I like the west side better, all the good stuff is there! If you come out again you have to come in the summer and drive from Red Lodge, MT over the Beartooth Highway and then over Chief Joseph Pass to Cody, WY - awesome views and the most fun you can have driving on pavement!

I was laughing at the BTH closing again....like we didn't see that coming. Was thinking about heading there this weekend at the last minute then changed my mind.

First official camping trip with the Runner and RTT this weekend! Went pretty well all in all - getting the cover back on is a little tough but everything else was fine (tent is about a foot higher on the Runner than how I had it mounted over my truck bed)

Runner made a friend today....thought he was going to climb in the back and come home with me!

Was just watching them and knew if I kept quiet they'd come closer....just didn't expect them to come that close! They were pretty relaxed the whole time, maybe they saw my "I brake for moose" bumper sticker and knew I was a good human.
Across the river...

Closer....

That is awesome! Moose have good taste. Here in Colorado, I've watched people get out of their cars to take pics of the moose almost becoming Darwin Award candidates...

Like the tent!

I really didn't think they'd get that close! And I didn't want them that close - I bought a huge lens for my camera for a reason! Once they got up there I was scrambling to keep Runner inbetween me and them just in case.
Moose just like me. Elk too... and I probably haven't made the best decisions in these scenarios but I do, in general, try to keep my distance from the animals. They come to me and as long as I am within the safety of my vehicle I'm OK with that. I don't go out seeking these encounters, it just sort of happens!
Was watching two bulls last summer in WY and they came within about 30' of my truck. I was just standing in the door on my sliders taking pics of them, they didn't care.

Had another moose walk up to me a couple years ago too - I stopped with a crowd and there were two bulls in the meadow along the road. I jumped out of the truck so fast I didn't grab a coat. So I was taking pictures and getting cold and sort of huddled down to keep the camera still. Next thing you know this bull moose starts to walk towards me. So I stood up thinking that once he saw I was big and more intimidating he'd veer away. Nope. So I started talking to him...this was towards the end of their rut so I told him that I wasn't interested in him in that way.... thought the guy standing next to me was going to die laughing. He eventually lost interest in me and wandered away towards his buddy.

And I had to share my campsite with a bull elk a few years back in Grand Teton. Set up camp and then left for the afternoon. Came back close to sunset and had a few things to throw in my tent (pre-RTT days) so I was walking over to my tent when I heard this snort - looked up and saw this bull elk standing next to my tent! Decided to put the stuff back in my truck until he left. He eventually wandered away and I built a fire for the night and settled in. Next thing you know, he's back! There was some flowering shrubs adjacent to my camp and he was very intent on munching on them. So I was sitting there wondering what to do and hoped that the fire between me and him was enough to deter him. I started talking to him too - scolding him for sneaking up on me. Then I heard whispers behind me - half of the campground had gathered on the road to watch this elk. I yelled at them that they didn't need to whisper, he wouldn't be bothered either way. He eventually wandered off again and I figured that it was all over. Some of the other campers came over to talk to me and they dubbed me "the elk whisperer". Some time in the night he came back again. Scared the crap out of me. At first I thought it was a bear and my heart was racing as I was planning out my escape from my sleeping bag ("quietly" open my bag zipper, two tent zippers, grab my bear spray, knife and keys and dash to the safety of my truck). Then, amidst my panic, I listened for a second to figure out where these unidentified footsteps were coming from.....and I heard leaves rustling, and chewing...and a burp.... stupid elk, not a bear. Then I heard a little rustling and a sigh....he bedded down for a nap in the trees about 10 to 15 feet away from my tent! Once I got my heart rate down and was able to get back to sleep with my new elk friend snoozing nearby, all was good. And again I thought my strange elk encounter was over - but oh, no! Got up that morning and made a trip to the ladies' room. On my way back a couple of campers stopped me and asked if I had looked at my truck yet - NO! I was thinking someone had hit me and drove away (I'm very protective of my vehicles, damaging them is a death sentence for the responsible party) so I start to panic and ask why, what happened? They told me that the elk had come over and had licked my truck! I thought they were joking but I started to inspect my truck and could see slobber marks all over it! I don't know if he was just super thirsty and was trying to lick the dew off or if he was convinced that my freshly waxed with blue raspberry scented car wax truck was some sort of tasty elk treat! I decided to name him WILLY then - short for window licker....
My first sighting of Willy...

And my slobber covered windows...

Excellent pics! Just be careful with moose especially during mating season or mamma's with calf's. I was riding my bike up Mt Evans last year. We came to a stop at a switch back in the road for a quick break. At mile 7 on hwy 103, looked down hill and there was a momma moose charging us about 20 yards away! I yelled moose and me and my two other friends with me all pedaled as hard as we could up a 7% grade and we didn't slow down for about three miles. That momma was chasing us and came real close to catching us. Her head was down and ears were back and she meant business. Watch the body language. I'm getting used to your pics and build and don't want to lose you... ;-)

Hey, hey, hey! Looks like a grand adventure. and wow, lots of moose pics - sure makes me jealous. Looking like I will be returning to my home range, so moose hunting needs to recommence! Keep me posted if you get a group trip together, would love to get some more exploring in, especially some fresh mountain views. Keep it up, as always, the pictures are a treat. :)

yeah, you don't mess with mommy! Moose, bears, whatever. Moms scare me more than the boys sometimes. I do watch their body language. These guys were all relaxed, grazing, ears up, hackle relaxed... And when they get that close I make sure they know I'm there - talk to them, move around, etc. So they're not surprised.
I was charged by a bull moose once. One of the scariest animal encounters I've ever had. Was hiking and saw a cow moose grazing on the hill above the trail. Told my boyfriend to stop so I could get a picture. While I was digging in the backpack for the camera he starts whining that we need to go. I'm like yeah, yeah lemme get a picture first! He says no we're going NOW! And I looked up and see that little miss moose's boyfriend had shown up and was heading our way. We ran about a half a mile uphill before he stopped. They eventually wandered off...into the woods right at a switchback in the hiking trail. So we had to scurry past them twice more!

Mooses love me, what can I say!?!
I'm planning on being in your neighborhood again this summer. I'll give you a head's up so hopefully you can join me this year.

Since I was posting with one eye closed when I added those pics (bad allergy day) I'll elaborate on my trip now...
Took the Runner on a 3 day, 2 night camping trip over the Beartooth Highway and through Yellowstone (again) last weekend. Still winter up at the top! There were even some folks up there skiing! Was a good drive, not too busy and the weather was great. I'll get through the rest of my pics at some point.

Runner and I are sitting by the campfire in Grand Teton right now. Was a pretty good day - drove River Road in the park which is as close to off roading as you can get within the park boundary (just rough enough to scare 99% of the rental car driving tourists away) and saw 5 moose and 2 big bull elk. I think Runner has good moose karma, I'll keep him! :)

Really enjoy the pictures in your thread but it makes miss my hometown even more. I am going to try and retire in 10 years or so or at least have enough money to do so and my wife and I will be heading back West somewhere.

I'm jealous - haven't been to Tetons for years - and grass is greeeeen and wild flowers blooming. More pics ---pleeease.

Love the instant tent.
