my 4runner got keyed yesterday. nice long scratch across the drivers side door.

anyone any have any home remedies i should try. I am imagine a body shop fix will be pricey. open to suggestions.

You can try buffing it out but depending on how deep it is it might still show.

You might ask your dealer who they use to do touch ups on their used cars. Some of those guys can almost work magic, and without stripping/priming/painting the whole side. That's an option I'd look at if they're too deep to buff out.

if they are not deep you can use some meguiars ultimate compound, but be aware that the clearcoat is really thin on these things


if it's through the clear just file a claim and pay your deductible for a body shop to take care of it

if its not too deep, try quixx psr, there are two products, a scratch remover that has worked wonders for me and a clear coat pen

If you can catch it with your fingernail, you're in trouble. If it's just a clearcoat scratch, use some mild abrasive "paint polish" followed by a clear coat polish and a wax. Meguiars has a stepped process that isn't bad, Griots makes a bunch of decent stuff that will take minor scratches out and is available at Auto Zone etc. Good luck, people who key are the worst kind of scum.

How bad/deep was the damage ? Can you see the paint/primer coming through the scratch ?

Some cut and polish would definitely help, but if its too deep, you'll have to look for other options.

it feels deep. i got a quote today to get it repaired at a body shop. $999.89 and wouldn't you know i have a $1,000 deductible. going to try some DIY remedies.
The DB's that do this crap are scumbags.

My thoughts on solutions have all been mentioned above. I got my Truck keyed in 2014. Long story short my ex decided to key the word "*****/whore" into the side. Allllll the way through. Had to get the entire passenger side redone because it extended from the back fender to the side mirror. Talk about mad? Thankfully the idiot did it where there was a camera in the parking lot. Had to pay for the whole thing. karma did its job there. But of luck to you! Some people just straight suck.

before you forget, drop your deductible to something like $50 for next time, it will add very little to your premium to make your deductible low enough that you'll actually use the insurance you're paying for.

Dropping mine to $50 cost me less than $3 of $4/month

Do you think the clear would be ok with a AIO correction? Planning on using blackfire AIO with a griot buffer? After that, sealant and yearly polish only.

Sometimes insurances have a vandalism clause. I know my buddy's king ranch got dinged up by someone a couple years ago, and it was a pain but he got the police to file a simple vandalism report that lowered his deductible to $50 instead of $500.

Great advice! I hope to never need to use it, but it's good to know the clause exists.

Yeah, I used to work at one of those places and the bosses would charge people for unnecessary work.

Definitely try DIY before dropping $1k.
