My '87 Daily driver

How are you getting the windshield trim to stick back on? I was under the impression that everyone breaks the plastic clips and the can't be replaced without removing and reinstalling the windshield. I'm finally getting ready to have it painted, after four years of ownership, and I kind of want to put the trim back on. Maybe some 3M emblem tape would work.
 
You have to remove the wiper arms and the cowl cover to expose the plastic clips for the bottom trim piece. Those clips have small screws the secure the clips to the body, once the screws are out, be careful prying them up. A small square piece snaps into the body where the screws go in. There are also three or four oddly shaped plastic pieces attached to the bottom trim that hold up the cowl cover. Once the base trim was in, I re installed the cowl cover and wiper arms. There where two butterfly looking plastic clips on each pillar and three metal clips that appeared to under the glass. I wedged the trim groove into the butterfly looking pieces and pushed straight down on the trim, it snapped onto the metal clips and held firm. I did the same with the top strip, but it only has the metal clips. I was worried the most about the top trim, but it's held up to 75mph without issue. I did use a small amount of weather strip glue on the little corner trim pieces. Not sure it needed it, but seemed like a good idea.

I installed the short shifter kit from LC tonight, was not a good thing to do while having an absent minded day. After taking everything apart and cleaning the top plate and all the broken plastic pieces of the old bushing out, I put the kit in and buttoned everything up. I was all happy with myself having finished the install in about an hour, only to look down and see the top plate gasket sitting on the passenger floor mat. I took it all apart again and put the gasket it, was almost ready to set the console back on and realized I failed to peen the set screws on the ball extension. So it all came apart then back together again. I had to trim a little bit to get to the corner bolt and because I don't have a body lift, the shifter is now 1" higher than before. I drove around the block and was amazed at the shift improvement! I'm sure a big part of that was the new bushings, but I'm very happy with the shorter shift throw too, much more positive feel. I might heat and bend the shift handle back a couple inches, but the added length actually works better for me with my seating position. For $125, this was well worth it.





 
Seems like doing a job on the 4runner more than once is my M.O.
I installed the rear AAL's today and had a ***** of a time with them. After getting it all together and driving around the block, I knew something was wrong. It was ridiculously too stiff and the lift seemed too high. I didn't bother to do any homework before installing them and I had put the new leafs in with an old worn out set that was already in place. I had five leafs and the overload, after tearing it apart and removing the old AAL's, it looks and rides MUCH better. Overall, the rear sits just under 2" higher. Maybe next weekend I'll get to the 1.5" bj spacers and new ball joints, tie rods, and idler. Hopefully I will get it right the first time around, lol

On a side note, what shocks do you guys recommend? My rears just barely reach with the weight of the truck on them, they are limiting all down travel. I'm guessing the fronts will have the same issue after adding the bj spacers?
 
I couldn't take the raked out look any longer, so I installed the bj spacers and new ball joints today. The ride suffers a little, but I think that's all from the rear. It's too stiff, but that could be part of the shock issue too.
No problems with the bj spacers, it all went as it should. I checked the torsion bar adjustment, but don't know what to reference it too? The front seems to ride decent, it's showing about 1-1/8th" of threads from the top of the jamb nut to the end of the adjuster. I'm guessing its about 70% pre loaded? I want to make sure it's right before going in for the alignment.
 
Of course, as my luck goes, the day wasn't without carnage. Some how I managed to step out of the truck and catch the rocker molding on my shoe lace. It broke a clip and bent the F out of it! I still don't get how it happened really, but now I need to find another one.


This is after I bent it back the best I could, damnit!
 
After getting the alignment last weekend, I had them replace the exhaust too. It's very quiet now and driving great! I will pick up some new front calipers this weekend and plan a day to go through the brakes soon, already have the LC rotors and V6 booster in the shop. Wish I could find a bolt-on rear disc solution with a parking brake!

After the brakes, I'll be looking at wheels and new 255/85 tires. I'm liking the KMC XD222 like I had on my sas'd runner, but thinking the 255 tire might look funny on a 8.5" wide wheel?
 
Did you go back with all stock exhaust? New cat and muffler? What size pipe. I am planning on getting new exhaust soon

Man I did the same thing about three months ago to my 4runner!

BTW i grew up in Gig Harbor WA, nice to see another South Puget Sound T4R fan!
 
No much is new, still driving it daily and burning oil!
I ordered 255/80/R17 Cooper Maxx tires yesterday, soon to be mounted on new FJ limited wheels! Next up, all new V6 brake upgrade.

Excited to see how the Coopers look on the runner! I'm thinking of getting them for myn. Also, with the v6 brake upgrade, are those the brakes from the second gen or 3rd gen?
 
I'm using stuff from the V6 2nd gen. I've had most of the parts for a long time now, just need new calipers. I'm going to take the whole front end apart and swap to a 4.88 diff and manual hubs while I have it all apart.
